I distinctly remember someone telling me that if you ate cucumber and washed it down with milk, you'd poison yourself. Any other 'myths' like that, you have been told over the years? Of course, I've never tried it.

I was told Brussel Sprouts were delicious. That's an urban myth for sure. I've washed cucumber down with milk, Patrick - and I'm fine! One of my favourite sandwiches is peanut-butter & cucumber and a glass of cold milk goes down perfectly with it.

If I feel like slaughtering monsters or whatever else, I nom some cheese before snoozing. (my fave one was the one where I tricked this giant into drinking nitro glycerine then blew his head open )

I tend to have nightmares when I'm poorly...horrible, twisted, disturbing dreams that sometimes defy description...very bizarre and unsettling they are. Haven't had any good zombie dreams lately though (which are classed as "adventure/cool dreams", not nightmares)...I need to watch a few of my Romero DVD's, get the genre firmly planted in my subconscious again. I suppose that cheese could induce nightmares if it was dipped in mescaline or LSD though... AH

I remember being told that if you swallowed chewing gum or bubble gum it would wind itself around your heart and kill you. Jeez, the things you believe as a kid. Tsk!

Carrots make your hair curl. Bad for me, as I have soft wavy hair that was the bane of my life when I ws a child, as it stuck out just at the point where my mother cut it, below the ears. With my rather large front teeth and this silly hair I looked uncomfortably like bugs bunny. Fortunately, I recognised it as nonsense, and ate my carrots which must be why my eyesight is so good.

Housey! You're back in one piece! Do tell us how you braved searing heat, fierce animals and demon Bed and Breakfast Landladies on your hols!! Ha! While you lot were sweltering, we were walking through soggy fields in thunderstorms. My waterproof footwear turned out not to be, and my poor feet got blisters. As for landladies - well, that might be the subject of another thread.

Sprouts are great! That's my treat at Xmas, sprout sandwiches.
I think the bad thing is giving bitter things like sprouts and broad beans etc to kids, because they mostly won't like them until they're older (or have grown out of wanting everything sweet).
Now I've forgotten the myth I was told. Damn.

The Govt are the worst at creating myths. There's no such thing as junk food. It's all food. Every country in the world has a dish involving minced beef, so how come hamburgers are deemed bad? And salt. They tell us that too much salt causes heart disease and high blood pressure. No it doesn't. Scientific studies have repeatedly shown there is no link in healthy adults. The govt tell us our daily intake should be no more than 6g, but patients being fed intravenously in hospital are given 9g a day!

I had two soft boiled eggs with a great mound of salt for my breakfast this morning. You just can't eat soft boiled eggs without salt, can you? I also had three slices of granary toast with lashings of butter and the last slice of toast had about an inch of marmalade on it.
I've been worried all day about the salt.
No, actually I haven't, but it's still nice to know that I'm not going to drop dead from salt poisoning or something.

As long as your kidneys are normal, high salt intake is ok.
What happens when you take too much salt is your body retains more water, particularly in the blood. Our veins are elastic and swell to take the extra volume. Older people have inelastic veins and so blood pressure can go up. But this is temporary, for an hour or so until the body flushes the excess through the kidneys.
What the health freaks don't say is there are as many people with low blood pressure as high.

My blood pressure is fairly low for my age. Yesterday I took it and it was 115/60. My kidneys are in great order. I could pee for England.
