Romulus My Father? We are pretty crap at movies here in Aus, but this particular one was supposed to be fair. Just wondered if it made it over to the UK. It is based on the book by Raymond Gator (Gaitor, Gaytor, something like that. Ally's brother, anyway).

Haven't seen it but you're not crap at films. Two of my all time favourites are from Oz - Rabbit Proof Fence and The Dish.

Oh thank you for that!!! Another good (old) one was "the last days of chez nous" with Richard Roxburgh and Frances O'Connor, although it would look very dated now. "lantana" was crap imo.
BUT THE BEST AUSTRALIAN FILM OF ALL TIME and one that warms the heart of everyone is THE CASTLE, closely followed by Kenny (the bog cleaner).
Has anyone seen the castle? If not, you must do so today at the latest, as your life will not have been fulfilled yet.

I like The Dish - Funny without trying. Dare I suggest "Walkabout"? Which I first saw accidentally when I was too young, and found it quite disturbing. Odd - 'specially when viewed now.

It is brilliant, its hard to explain in a way because its like, an "in joke" about a certain type of aussie family. You know how brits have iconic "types" like Alf Garnet, that sort of thing. Well, the family have a very modest little house right beside an airport runway. The main thing with this family is their love for each other and the happiness they find in life. It is full of aussie expressions but you all should be able to get the gist of it. Their way of life is threatened by a big business trying to forcibly buy their home and Daryl, the dad, who is aghast that someone would not "give a bloke a fair go" takes them on. That is the basis of it, but the beauty of the film is in the interactions between family members, the wonderful part played by one of our most respected (and recently departed) actors, Bud Tingwell, and the strong "feel good" element. Massively recommended.

The dish is good too, but not in the league of castle. The dish is good for one main reason, it is a true story.

Mad Max 1 & 2 are the dogs bollocks. Romper Stomper is also sweet. You Ausies are never gonna recapture the glory days of "Prisoner Cell Block H" though. AH

You Ausies are never gonna recapture the glory days of "Prisoner Cell Block H" though. AH I can remember a very rough "Sweeney-esque" detective series called "Bellamy" that was only (I think) ever shown on LWT/Thames late at night in the eighties. I have a trivial admission to make about P-SBH. I have had the dubious pleasure of seeing the first episode on the first night of the first "Late Night Broadcast" of three different ITV stations! TVS. Central and HTV. I got around a lot in those days.
