Bakery chain Greggs intends to open 600 new shops in the UK after seeing a rise in sales in the recession.
Greggs plans to open 50-60 new stores in 2010 and at least 70 new shops per year from 2011 onwards.
The Newcastle-based firm has done better than many retailers in the recession because of its relatively low-cost products.
Greggs said its financial position remains strong. Sales rose by 1% in the first 42 weeks of its financial year.
In August, Greggs reported a pre-tax profit of £16.5m for the first six months of the year, an increase of 7.3%.
The group has 1,400 shops in the UK and said it wanted to expand "particularly in areas where we are currently under-represented or have no presence at all"
"Currently more than 50% of the UK population do not have a Greggs nearby," chief executive Ken McMeikan said.
"We also see the continued opportunity to expand into locations where consumers work and travel such as transport hubs and industrial and retail parks, in addition to our more traditional presence on high streets," Greggs said in a statement.
However, shares in Greggs fell 3.7% as the firm said the expansion drive would cost it between £50m and £60m per year in capital expenditure.
It also said sales growth had slowed in recent weeks to 0.2%.[/url]
S'funny isn't it. The deeper the recession the more opportunity it gives the pedlars of crap food the chance to expand, with the news earlier this year that Dominoes Pizza, KFC and Subway are all going to make greater inroads in towns across the UK.
The worst thing is - they think they're doing us a favour!

No they don't, they know they are doing their shareholders a favour. If you don't like it, don't buy it!

We have a branch of Greggs at our village shopping precinct and they bake lovely bread. Haven't tried any of their 'fast food' though.

I bought a filled roll from Greggs last summer and it was very good :
inexpensive and (oh bliss, oh joy!) it was not wrapped in a triangular packet and chilled until all flavour was removed.

Greggs Bread is a bland as a beige Toyota! - I've tried it and it (wholemeal in this case) just had no flavour at all! They are just another chain store pumping their factory produced rubbish across the country. Radio 4's Food programme summed it up in a taste test of bread last year (before wheat prices spiralled.) The tester said (referring to Greggs) that it is impossible to produce a decent loaf of bread for under 69p, and when you read above that...
and mix in the fact......
They must be making the stuff out of sawdust!
It was the one thing that first disappointed me coming to Lancaster - it was Greggs or the Supermarket or nothing! Until I did a bit of digging and found our organic shop that has fabulous fresh and nutty flavoured wholemeal loaves daily, and another local one that has since stopped selling bread direct unfortunately. (No guesses why!) The more people support the likes of "Greggs" - the more we're going to lose the independent bakers.
The only supermarket that ever did decent bread mind, was Safeways. That went arse about face when Morrisons came in.

Well, I must admit I tend to usually buy Warburton's seeded bread, which is lovely for sandwiches. When I do buy white bread I get the uncut bloomer loaf from our Greggs (who then kindly slice and wrap it for me) and I think it tastes fine.

There's quite a good baker nearby but (like many other local shops) if you get there in the afternoon most of their shelves are empty; forget trying to get a wholemeal loaf after midday.
It would be horrid if a Greggs put them out of business, but perhaps if they had a rival they would buck their ideas up!

Warburton's white is my favourite. (I don't want bread to taste of anything much. I have it to dilute whatever I'm eating it with.)

....a little insider info.
Greggs kitchens are just as disgusting as McD's & Unlucky Fried Kittens....but I must admit to a passion for their Lemon Muffins.... yum...

Every day (when I'm not having buffet) I have a tuna crunch on brown from Greggs (£1.90).
Wholesome, nutritious and tastey. I can recommend.

I make my own pies these days. My Steak an onion in Red Wine with a puff pastry top is stonking! As good as anything I bought from Waitrose in years gone by. I do a mean Chicken and Mushroom and even my Cottage Pie is a wondrous homely piece of yum. Most important thing - I know exactly what goes into it. Small children mostly

Patrick, I hope you noted the outcome of this poll: The people have spoken. Stop your persecution of Greggs.

Of course! This is a highly democratic board.
You are ALL going to be baked in one of my pies very slowly until you see the error of your ways!
.........and there's an end to it!
