does anyone know a good greasy spoon to go to in Hastings? i havent found one yet, and im having a mad one tmrw night, so will be reqwuiring greasy sustenence of the finest kind on sunday morning/afternoon... Hastings has become all smart and gentrified now. hasn't it? You'll probably have to walk along the seafront to St Leonards - even then you might struggle a bit.

Losing the cricket ground was a mistake though. It was one of the last 'town centre' cricket grounds there was, and it made the centre of Hastings uncluttered. Sure, the shops outside weren't the prettiest architecturally speaking but.......
I wonder if the second hand bike shop is still above the stalls in the little flea market place just up from there. Bought a really nice Peugeot racer from there - for about £60 - it was a rather gurly Turqoise and purple colour - still, at least it would never have got nicked!

I THINK THE BIKE SHOP is still there Patrick, if im thinking of the place i live just down the road from there, up towards the station The chip shop you mentioned is still there, i think its called 'The Kingfisher' and in fact it won a local magazine poll of the best chip shop in east sussex ( althou i think they were only really focussing on hastings and eastbourne) not eaten there meself yet, but will be the first place i head for when i get fish n chip hankerings I dont know if Hastings iss gentrified now, only been here 6 months..it seems fairly smart.. dont remember the cricket ground or owt.. sT Leonards is pretty minging thou, i know that much.. funnily enough when i moved here it was under the impression that Hastings was a bit grotty and St Leonards was the nice part..seems the opposite is true!

Fifteen years ago St L's was pretty bad. Many of the seafront properties were empty and a couple seriously derelict, including a huge hotel at the top left hand corner of Warrior Square (looking at it with your back to the sea.)
I've just remembered there was chippy near the fisherman's huts that used to be pretty good, and allegedly award winning. The owner obviously did all right out of it - his Jaguar was usually parked prominently outside!
There was a coffee shop/bar just up from Yates (which used to be WHSmiths) - their speciality was thick treacly coffee that was a bit mind-bending! Also some cool jazz there some evenings.
