A partial lunar eclipse tonight, a little chunk will be disappearing from the base of the moon and it will be the first time in 300 years that we will have been able to see this exciting event.
As the sun sets in the southwest, the full moon rises in the northeast. At 5:17 p.m. local time Friday the moon begins to enter the Earth's shadow, though it is undetectable at first. At 6:52, the moon enters the darkest part of the Earth's shadow, called the umbra. Maximum eclipse is at 7:23, and the moon leaves the umbra at 7:53. The last traces of the shadow are gone by 9:28.
Australians may catch a glimpse of the eclipse just before moonset at dawn on Jan. 1.
At least, I THINK those are the times. I'll check.

There's some controversy about maximum eclipse ETA - some sources say 7.22 pm!

I don't understand; what exactly are we looking for? How will we know if we're seeing it?

An eclipse!!! Over New Year!!! I bet the Astrologers are going batty about that!
Capricorn
With the magnetic pressure of the Lunar Eclipse smack bang in the middle of your star chart you may find your legs pulling to the left a lot and too much alcohol on New Year's Eve will lead to spontaneous combustion if you mix it with curry. This may not be a good time to fall in love.

My left leg tries to rotate 90 degrees when I am sober. I intend to consume large quantities of alcohol this evening because it is exactly 2009 years since something vague. One celestial body temporarily interrupts our view of another, so what! I stopped believing in fairies when I was seven. There is a difference between spontaneous combustion and noxious gases.

Ah! you see - the extra magnetic power generated by the eclipse will make any build up of gas exceptionally dangerous this eveing!

So anything in space that we can see is exciting. No? It's space!!! Come on!!!!!

It's not too late, Jean! It's only starting now, will peak at 7.20. Of course, I had no snow- NO SNOW -for Christmas but suddenly, right on cue, now there is a flurry of it which means SNOW CLOUDS. No!!! There is NO justice. I briefly glimpsed the moon an hour ago, all full and fat and blue, before the clouds came. It was beautiful.

It is overcast and quite misty here - no moon, no stars.

I've just seen it - a sort of furry bite out of the bottom right hand edge.
It's moving uo in an anti-clockwise direction.
Good thing I looked at this thread again!

I saw a kind of blue line round the moon. Was that it?

Best I can do at such short notice. I blame Trubble. No sign of blue from here.
