I wasn't around in 1947, but I've heard terrible things about the severity of that winter. However, I well remember the big freeze of 1962/63 as I'd just started senior school. I think the big difference then was that so few people had central heating. We just had one fireplace in our flat, in the lounge. The bedrooms were unheated and freezing cold, and if you wanted the bathroom warm you had to take a paraffin stove in with you. We only had one bath a week though. Good grief, you'd th Thtink?I was born in 1947, and I remember the 60s winter you mention, E. We had only one usable fireplace, in a small terraced house. But plenty of coal. Two working pits in my suburb then. Our backyard was full of snow, at least 4ft deep. My rabbit died, but not because of the cold. She was inside by then. Mr. E. remembers their high level w.c. cistern freezing solid - and it was an indoor toilet too! Yep. That too. What fun. But, as the old cliché goes, we were happy. And we were. Must have been interrupted mid flow!

This has been flippin' brilliant. We've got tons of global warming coming out of the sky and the coldest globally warmed winter in 30 years. This morning I tried to go to work and it was a globally warmed -14 degrees. There was 6 inches of sheer globally warmed solid water on the hill out of my street and nobody was going anywhere so I've had the day off.
Just think how cold it would be without global warming.

I'm thinking of venturing out later on to pick up Mr. E's blood pressure tablets. I shall be walking. The snow down here in the Tropics is a couple of inches deep! Gasp!

As gesture of solidarity, I have turned my aircon down to 20 degrees. I shall have to turn it up again when Madame comes home.

Well so long as the localised snow disproves the existence of global warming I'm sure nobody will notice when rising water levels destroy even more of Asia and millions of refugees are forced to move elsewhere in the world to survive. Presumably that won't happen, provided there's a bit of snow around SWL's gaff.

Contrary to popular opinion - the white bits of global warming are not evidence that the sky is falling.
Can someone explain why ice cores sampled from Antarctica are evidence of global temperatures?
If I had a record of the temperatures in Glasgow going back 3000 years, does that mean I know what it was like in the Galapagos?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not denying climate change. Climates .... change. They always have done and I'm sure they always will. It's this guff that we're all to blame that irritates me.
IMO, the Marxists and anti-capitalists just put down their red flags and picked up green ones. Anything to attack evil capitalism.

Are conspiracy theorists any particular wing? Nothing wrong with being anti-communist, in my book. Communism and human nature don't seem to go hand-in-hand somehow.

I'm talking about those who consider eating yoghurt to be some kind of political statement, those who think 'liberal' and 'left' mean the same thing, those who think Common purpose or the Gettysburg address (or something) are global conspiracies to subvert the UK, etc. etc. etc. Whether global climate change is caused by humans or not, it seems utterly stupid to deny it is happening when one can see for oneself the evidence of villages being completely submerged elsewhere in the world because water levels are rising.

Having been around now for quite a few decades, I wouldn't deny that the climate is changing. I also don't deny that we occasionally have had something to do with the climate (namely, when the Clean Air Act was introduced and suddenly we don't get any more smog) but I just don't see how anything we do can stop water levels rising in Asia. By the way, isn't the East of England slowly sinking into the sea? Isn't that anything to do with global warming or is it just movement of tectonic plates? I'm not panicking but I'd just like to know.

I'm no scientist, so I have no clue what can be done to stop villages and towns in Asia being covered by water. But it seems obvious to me that we should be trying to do something. Otherwise mass migration will result in huge population changes, with millions of people moving to more sustainable areas. The dislocation and economic problems this will cause, to say nothing of the human misery, means we should do something.
And I can't quite get my head round the idea that the science trusted by all civilised Governments and international institutions is somehow wrong, generated as a deliberate conspiracy to create a new cause for lefties.

You can see it every day on The Harbour, when they're not frothing drivel about some other hate. Sometimes they manage to get all their pet hates into a single post.

It's about money.
I notice Al Gore has done very nicely out of carbon trading.
