I think the difference is that in Italy traditionally the pasta dish is eaten before the meat or fish course so the amount of bolognaise or any other sauce is minimal. Over here we tend to consider pasta a main course and so the meat sauce needs (we think) to more substantial.

In Canada you might well be asked, upon ordering a cappuccino, whether you want French or English. I said "Italian". Blank looks. Yoof.)

Though Italians at home often make a quick meal of pasta followed by cheese and/or salad. Pasta is so quick and easy to do that they are always very puzzled by the made-up pasta dishes on our supermarket shelves. (But what really makes them ROTFL their AO is this.)

And with pasta dishes, I always eat the pasta first and then go and get some bread - white, yes (I don't care for brown; besides, it's rhyming slang for Dead) - white bread with butter goes really well with tomato-based sauce.

I never cook chips as I'm always nervous of having a pot of boiling oil on the stove. However, chips in paper straight from the chippie with loads of salt and vinegar (which should be made the law) and eaten in the street on a cold day is one of my best things ever. Although, thinking about it, I did my version of chips last night. I cut potatoes into chip shapes put them in a casserole dish with a little water and microwaved them for about 8 minutes (trust me on this one). I drained what little water there was left and while the potatoes were still hot I seasoned them and gave them a glug of olive oil. I then tipped the potatoes into an already hot roasting tin and crisped them up for about 20 minutes (hot oven gas 7/225 deg.) They taste and look like chips except they are better. Microwaving the potatoes keeps them whole - they don't break up like they would if you'd par boiled them.

What's wrong with chips, though - seriously? Nothing at all - it's just chips + pasta.Then you've got too much sauce in the first place (see above). But I will let you into a secret... Italians eat bread with pasta (it's white too, but it's crusty and it never has butter on). AND...last time I was in Italy I saw some youngsters eating pizza topped with chips.

I've enjoyed pizza sandwiches. And pizza and chip sandwiches.
One of my best ever meals was pizza (cooked in thre Public Image Metal Box tin) and cold new potatoes with bread and butter, eaten several hundred feet underground. (I've said this before.)
I don't like the idea of pasta and bread - that's why I eat all the pasta before getting onto the bread. I just prefer bread to pasta. And I like butter.

I love my bolognese so much, I'll have it cold for breakfast if there's any left! Take this morning - well, 11am this morning - I partook of a nice little leftover smidgen of last night's Lasagne that Best Beloved had left. Yum! So full of flavour, So lovely! So Mine!
