Principally, I think, Weyland and Costal. You'll never believe this. I had a birthday card today from my auntie and she enclosed a couple of photographs of her daughter (my cousin) with her daughter. It seems my cousin's daughter is going out with, wait for it, my god I can't believe it, "Alfie" of Larkrise fame (real name John Dagleish). My auntie met him a couple of weeks ago and says he is lovely. She enclosed a photo of him with my cousin's daughter and although you can recognise him, he does look very different.
I'm very excited.

Your cousin's daughter -- she's not called Minnie, is she?

Is he the one who plays the guy with the accordion? Dawn French plays his mum? We get that series over here

Weyland, my cousin's daughter is not Minnie, but I daresay she will be called that quite often (especially in our family).
Moto - yes, that's the one. He looks so much better in r.l. (apparently).
I shall be phoning my auntie today so will get the gossip and pass it on. However, my lips will be sealed as to the Alfie and Minnie thing and you won't be able to drag it out of me, even with torture and stuff.

I like the way they've gradually introduced Minnie and now she is very much a regular. What an unusual face she has too. I love her character.
I haven't had a chance to speak to my auntie today but I will phone her tomorrow and let you have the goss.

Minnie is the token Real Woman character, bringing a certain everyday sharp feminine realism into the stories which we can all relate to. The rest of them are obviously too good to be true, or way over the top. It's the same with the men -- Twister is the only Real one, just like your Uncle Bill or Dave down the pub, and the others all too good to be true or just plain daft.

They seem to have left the book a long way behind, now.

I'm sure they have. I love the programme, but they do far too much singing and dancing for my liking.
My auntie tells me that my cousin's daughter has been going out with 'Alfie' for about a year.

Minnie will be livid! . . . No -- I can't imagine Minnie getting annoyed with anything. I thought the singing in the Harvest episode was good. I guess those songs originated for the very purpose of giving rhythm to the vital teamwork, like sea shanties while they were furling sails, heaving on anchor chains, inhaling the grog, etc. Apart from that, I can do without it.
