Sorry Trubs, but I think that's a shite poem. It focuses on the racial symbolism without accepting or recognising the wider symbolism of Obama's election. It tries to recast a radical universal moment into the boxes of American racial poltiics. And as such kind of misses the point about Obama . . . But then I think most poetry is a bit shit. Oh I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I always feel a bit embarrassed when I read modern poetry. The poet has obviously gone to a lot of trouble, and poured his innermost thoughts on to the page, and there's me going "Huh? Wos he on about? It don't rhyme!". You can't beat a nice bit of Rudyard Kipling, I always say.

I'm not sure if modern poets do have innermost thoughts these days do they? Tell you a great "modern" poet of the old school - if that's not too much of a mixed metaphor - and that's Roger McGough. Brilliant. He has a website here - with coincidentally - as you were talking about parental relationships in another thread - a rather nice little poem about that on the front page.
