Thank you, Ev, but I'm not quite back yet. Still at friend's place with very swollen ankle. Probably properly back on Monday. Meanwhile -- to hell with the expense -- get your kit off . . . . . Behave. This is not a stag party, and Mrs E is not the stripper! Mind you, it is rather hot this evening. How's Glasgow Riot? It's damned hot down here.

Cooling down a bit now, but yes, it's been roasting. Of course, it's still broad daylight up here and will be for another two hours. Is it dark in Essex yet?

Actually, I just looked out of the window and you can still see, it's not pitch black. It just looked dark because I have the light on but the curtains are open.

Behave. This is not a stag party, and Mrs E is not the stripper! Shut the very-swollen-and-painful-ankle up. I am badly in need of feminine sympathy and womanly off-kittedness.

Well, I've spent the evening chewing over the probability of jack being lost at sea.
He set out for Weymouth this afternoon and I had not heard from him since then. At 9.30 I phoned the harbour he usually stays in, and was told he wasn't there, and advised me to contact the coastguard.
I've just got a message from him saying he is tied up safely and will call back. To be fair, it was left at 8.30 but for some reason there is a delay before it gets through.
Happily, I got it before sending out the air/sea rescue.

I think the thread is being hijacked, and I have no idea what to respond to now . housesparrow - question 2 isnt relying on any different methodology to question 1. Both questions simply require you to throw out a pile of families that dont match the initial criteria, and what you are left with decides the probability. For question 1 you throw out any family that doesnt have two children, and any family that doesnt have at least one girl. For question 2 you throw out the same, but also any family that doesnt have at least one girl born on wednesday. The key thing with question 2 is that because you need a girl born on wednesday as part of your family you are more likely to match this by having two girls than you are by having one which raises its respective probability compared to the BG or GB combos, hence edging you closer to 1/2. BTW it has been about 20C - 25C here (Toronto) over the past few days.

OK - I read that problem from a different perspective; ie you have your two child family, and in question one are given the information that it has one girl. We don't know anything abut her, but if we are told that she is called Amy or has red hair, the question would still be possible to answer.
I'll have to now try to get my head around the second way of interpreting it.

My apologies for the rudeness yesterday. Drink had been taken, I was overtired, and I was feeling sorry for myself. But I'm really just the same fluffy old Weyland.

London was great, Ev! Not least because of this . . . I was there that evening, with daughter, son, and ex-wife. Tremendous experience. The greatest living Geordie -- including me!

I've never been on HMS Belfast!
The National and the Portrait Galleries are great. Also the Imperial War Museum. I took my mum there! She said the air raid shelter experience was very good.
You didn't bother with The Tower of London then?

I've never been on HMS Belfast! I used to work for the company that built the Belfast's steam turbines. And the turbines of a lorralorra warships of the time. And many liners as well, such as the Mauretania. The same company whose founder invented the steam turbine in the first place. I went there to see the engine room. Closed. Asbestos. Couldn't do everything. In any case, I didn't do it.

And did ev ever get her kit off? I couldn't possibly comment. You'd have to ask her. (A gentleman wouldn't ask, of course.)
