As ITV admits it did tweak the sound of people auditioning for the new series of the X Factor, Channel 4 News culture editor Matthew Cain analyses whether such revelations will hit the show's popularity.

This Saturday night, X Factor blasted onto our screens for a brand new series. It was watched by a staggering 11.1 million people – an increase on the 9.9 million who watched last year's launch show.

Yes, Channel Four News Standards are slipping Things will only get worse as it seems Ofcom seem to be giving ITV all the help it needs to collapse in on itself. Still, it may soon become a subscription channel which should make the choice easy. ;D

Heard some clips on R4 PM yesterday. If that's enhanced, I'm Mario Lanza. And of course the material doesn't help at all. Regurgitated glop.

I think they already have! There's a fashion - or there was - for certain "Dance music" DJ's to speed up the vocals on songs (So I'm informed). It then sounds just like some of P & P's finest chart hits!

Slightly different: the bass on "I feel Love" was accidentally doubled and shifted, creating that bubbly effect. But the song was deliberately pitched too high for Donna Summer, to make her strain.
