It sounds too good to be true but a company are on the hunt for some beer testers in the Lake District.
The Society of Independent Brewers are holding their annual beer competition and the first part of the regional awards is being held at Hawkshead Brewery.
All you have to do is be prepared to sample upto 16 different types of beer in a blind taste test - and if you can still speak, rate them!
The judging will take place on Friday 6th November in The Beer Hall at Hawkshead Brewery in the Lake District and will be followed by a SIBA beer festival. The winners will then go on to the national final in February 2010.
SIBA are inviting up to 10 members of the public who love beer to join industry professionals and beer experts to decide the region’s best beers.
Alex Brodie a SIBA North Trustee who is also the MD of Hawkshead Brewery, says: “There’s been an extraordinary boom in the number of small breweries in recent years. Proper beer has broken through and everyone is now starting to appreciate it. There were just 4 micro breweries in 1971 and there are now 600.
“SIBA represents nearly 500 breweries. These awards are a celebration of the region’s best beers and we want to recruit a good cross section of judges from today’s beer drinkers, including women and younger people. It’s a chance to help choose the very best beers across the North of England, alongside some of the most experienced people in the brewing industry.”
The number of women and young people drinking real ales has been growing in recent years. Around half a million women and 1.3 million young people aged 18 to 35 now regularly drink cask ales4.
160 beers have been entered in this year’s awards by 45 different breweries across the region including ones from Manchester, Merseyside, Yorkshire, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, Lancashire, Cumbria, Cheshire and the Isle of Man. Each judge will sample up to 16 beers in a blind tasting, scoring them on their appearance, aroma, flavour, aftertaste and saleability.
The judges will all be given advice about what sort of things they need to look for and the ‘public judges’ will be placed on tables alongside seasoned beer industry experts.
If you live in the North of England, are over 18 and think you have what it takes to help judge the region’s best ales you simply need to send your contact details, including postal address, with up to 100 words saying when and how you first discovered proper beer. Applications should be sent to BeerCompetitions@SIBA.co.uk and the judges will be selected by the SIBA North Trustees.
The closing date is 1pm on Monday 26th of October.
Judges will need to be available at Hawkshead Brewery in Staveley in Cumbria from 10.30am to 3pm on the 6th of November. Judges will also need to arrange their own transport and accommodation.
I'll race you there!
