A sad day for Wombles everywhere.
Elisabeth Beresford, the writer best known for creating the much-loved children's television programme,The Wombles, has died.
The 84-year-old invented the characters of the Wombles of Wimbledon Common, who became household names in the 1970s.
Beresford died at 10.30pm yesterday in the Mignot Memorial hospital on Alderney, in the Channel Islands, after suffering heart failure, her son Marcus Robertson said.
It must have been in the run up to Christmas 1974, or 5 that my Mum was knitting something red and I remember asking her what it was - she said it was "for a friend who's coming for Christmas". My brother and I both got Wombles this year - Orinoco for me and a Bungo-ish one for my brother. They were home made, and so much better than the ones the shops were churning out as their noses were the proper colour. Loved the Wombles. Still have the LP of the the "Mike Sammes Singers" singing "Hits of The Wombles" - the very first LP I was given! As long as there's nostalgia there will always be The Wombles as each generation will undoubtedly revive them for the next.
