Apart from the inspired casting, the first rate script...excellent acting...there were the wonderful memories.. I've only ever cried at the death of one 'celebrity' and that was Eric Morecambe.
My childhood was their show...that warm feeling especially at Christmas.
As for Victoria Wood...words fail me. The woman is a legend.

Just watching that, and the documentary afterwards switched on a light of warmth and affection. Now it's gone it's like someone opened a trap door beneath me. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

V Wood's film Housewife, 49 is on I think ITV 2 or something like that tonight. That was good as well.

On R4 right now, from the 50s. Eric is playing Robin Hood . . .
Ernie: How did you come to fall in with these outlaws?
Eric: Fell out with the in-laws.

I fell asleep on the sofa, but Mr. E. watched it and enjoyed it.
Actually, confession time: I never really found them that funny. Oh, I always watched their show at Christmas and it was good, but I never laughed out loud at their jokes.
Does this mark me down as a bad person?
I can't stand Leonard Cohen or Nina Simone either.

Hardly any of their jokes were that funny if you came to them cold; but they had a cumulative effect. Also, it had to be them; no one else with the same material would have worked, or not as well.
"Nice out, isn't it?" "Yes - I should put it away though - someone's coming."
(I don't know if this was them; but I once saw it in a magazine, as "an old Morecambe and Wise joke.")

Superb. Just watched it on iplayer as I missed it on the night. The two young actors were perfect...looks playing an important part but they never once fell into caricature.
First class drama, first class television. I only wish we had more stuff like this.
I still say that Eric Morecombe (oh for heaven's sake Sesley) ...Morecambe, could have made it without Ernie Wise. He'd have been very good in a typical Galton and Simpson Hancockian type vehicle.

Whew. Morecombe and Wise at their best have given me a weak smile. The rest of the time they irritate. Give me the two Ronnies any day. But Leonard Cohen and Nina Simone used to make my spine tingle...though even they have their dire moments.

I loved the end of their show where they always did a singing sketch. This was one of my favourites: Scroll forward to 4.28 to see Ronnie Corbett singing the best bit.

Did you catch the One Ronnie show over Christmas, to mark Ronnie Corbett's 80th birthday?

That was the thing. I found the Two Ronnies clever, but not that funny.
Morecambe and Wise were just daft, and I found that very funny. But it built up; the first joke was not funny, but after 5 minutes of the same kind of thing you'd be giggling like an idiot.

I've got to be careful if Bill Bailey threatens to appear on radio or TV, especially the latter. He just IS funny, and I'm sure it's dangerous to laugh that much. Wouldn't dare to go to one of his shows. The only other time it happens is when Paul Merton gets a head of steam up with one of his surrealistic rants on HIGNfY, especially when augmented by an on-form Hislop (or John Bishop, if he's on). Sublime.

Sublime. Oh, definitely. HIGNFY is one of my favourites. Hislop makes me laugh because often he's spot on. Bill Bailey is good too. Did you ever see Black Books? He was in that with wossisname the Irish bloke.

Did you catch the One Ronnie show over Christmas, to mark Ronnie Corbett's 80th birthday? Yes, it was very good Housey. Ronnie Corbett is different to Ernie Wise in that he stands alone very well - although he was excellent with Ronnie Barker. They were a good team but were equally excellent on their own as well.
