Looks like we won't be abroad this year. Notwithstanding the overall family dysfunction (we all hate each other right now) we have to consider the pitiful state of Sterling against the Euro and Dollar. Still, they say that half the fun of travel is planning the trip. So I issue a challenge to you all. The goal is to plan a really good round the world trip for under $10k (which is probably about £10k these days!!!) (Flights only.) You have to only visit cities you actually want to visit. Or whatever othe rules you like really. The point is to plan your own perfect journey round the world. Here is the link to a site that lets you do this. www.airtreks.com/tools/tripplannerv5/tripplanner.php?ref=BOOTSNALLYou can then e-mail yourself the trip to get a copy and paste. This is my first effort, but I'm not sure about the Madrid and Moscow options ; the site puts in those cities you need to connect with. I might work on it further. Your friend wanted to tell you about this trip: Glasgow - Amsterdam - Madrid - Casablanca - Madrid - Malta - Moscow - Tbilisi - Almaty - Moscow - Ulan Bator - Beijing - Xian - Guilin - Guangzhou / Canton - Bangkok - Kathmandu - Delhi - Calcutta / Kolkata - Bangkok - Saigon / Ho Chi Minh - Manila - Hong Kong - Taipei - Tokyo - Honolulu - Seattle - Washington D.C. - New York - Glasgow Estimated Price: US$ 6985 to US$ 9220 Date Created: 05 January 2009
The original city list your friend entered to generate this trip is: Glasgow - Amsterdam - Casablanca - Tbilisi - Almaty - Ulan Bator - Calcutta / Kolkata - Saigon / Ho Chi Minh - Hong Kong - Tokyo - Honolulu - Seattle - Washington D.C. - GlasgowThe challenge to you all is to come up with a better one!

For 10k I'd be tempted just to get one really good place and stay there. But I'll give it a shot.

OK Patrick, I need to change the rules as you are doubling back on yourself a couple of times there.
So am I to some extent, as it seems if we want to do both Kazakhstan and Mongolia we need to go through Moscow each time, so I'm thinking of dropping Kazakhstan. Mongolia is not negotiable.
You're doubling back on Paris, Madrid AND Cairo.
Malaga? That's an odd one to have on a round the world trip!!!

P.S. Patrick - you don't have Cuba on your orginal list, so how could it price it in?
or are you saying that the programme just won't include Cuba? Can someone try to include Havana on their list to see?
Maybe they're havana laugh (boom boom).

There is some website somewhere where you can see all the connections between airports - e.g. if I am at Ulan Bator (Mongolia), where else can I fly to (except Moscow)?
Does anyone have a link?

Cuba just doesn't have a listing, and I zoomed in close up too. Perhaps, like Mongolia you have to go in a certain way. Surely you can get there through China somewhere?

I've just had a go at going straight down from London to Johannesburg, but you can't stop off at Casablanca on the way - and you have to go to Madrid for Casablanca - so, to go to Johannesburg you have to go back from Casablanca to London again and back out. I Can't believe that an international airport like Madrid doesn't serve South Africa?
Perhaps it's like "The Trainline" and only the airlines who "make a donation" get a listing?

You need to further refine your route to avoid doubling back. I think I had come up with a way for me to avoid the doubling back to Moscow involving Istanbul and Peking, but unfortunately I jotted it all down on a bit of paper, then used the paper to wrap a piece of chewed Nicorette and threw it in the bin, so have to start again. Seriously though, why Malaga on a round the world? Surely you could do that in an easy little package deal? And also seriously, would you do Australia on a round the world, or is Australia the kind of place you would want to spend 3 or 4 weeks in its own right? I've never been so don't know. Don't fancy Australia much. It's too much like a version of the UK. Although it would be nice to catch up with Aviatrix . . .

What about doing UK - South Africa direct, and then coming back up north into Europe? Maybe have to miss out Casablanca? Decisions, decisions, decisions. I swear by the red earth of Tara that, within the next 10 years, I am doing this. We have a few k still saved from when Gothboy sold his house to move in with me. My mortgage is paid off in 4 years. The children both leave school THIS year . . . this is more than just a pipe dream to me.

Anyway Patrick, I've just remembered that I don't approve of people going to Cuba on holiday.
I think if you're coming that general way better to stop off in Hawaii and pay tribute to the Obama.

Some of my best friends have been to Cuba y'know! ;D Talking of which - Haven't heard from them for ages, so didn't send a Christmas card this year - and to another friend - who I've not heard from either, only to get a joint email from the pair of them saying "Ooh! No Christmas card this year? Why's that then!"

I had to double back to London just to get to Paris - after I'd been all around the world I didn't feel like it so I cancelled the entire trip in disgust. But I had only spent $5000 anyway so I will try harder tomorrow. I tried to skip Australia too but I wanted New Zealand and the only way was through Sydney.

Paying off the mortgage is a great relief and once the kids are at work you'll be able to afford it hopefully. Sydney is fab. Well we thought so. But whatever you do, don't miss New Zealand.
