Just listening to Marianne Faithfull on Woman's Hour, singing her latest song, it amazes me how some people manage to attain what they now call "celebrity" status. She was, frankly, a crap singer in the 60s (and you can believe me on that because I saw her live). She's now even worse, and a warning to any aspiring singer to stop smoking if you want a decent voice when you're old. (Having said that, Nat King Cole was a heavy smoker and had a wonderful voice, but then he died in his forties of lung cancer.

I can take or leave her but I usually leave her. I suppose she is 'celebrity status' because she's part of the rock and roll sixties nostalgia chapter.

I especially never liked her after the Mars Bar incident.

Yeah, I always thought of her as a rocker gal.

So do I. But it sounds like a story made up by someone wanting it to be true, like the alternate dirty words that the FBI concocted for "Louie Louie" (And which Iggy Pop sang many years later). The truth can never be as lurid as a puritan's fantasy.

Actually, Aubs, how do we know whether Miss Faithfull is telling the truth? I mean, to paraphrase another girl of dubious character: "She would say that, wouldn't she?"

I don't know - she might not. It didn't harm her reputation, did it?
And the police do have a habit of making up and leaking stories about people they arrest.

I've got nothing against her. Being able to sing doesn't matter much in pop music anyway.

True. But if you're going to have people who can't sing, at least give the young ones a chance. These old sixties singers and groups don't weather so well now that they're getting on a bit. They were great in their day when they were young (Marianne Faithfull excepted, imho) but it always makes me feel sad when I see them still keeping going. (Even Ray)
If I want to listen to sixties music (which I do), I play my CDs of the original recordings.

These old sixties singers and groups don't weather so well now that they're getting on a bit. How true. Peter Green, the greatest R&B guitarist in the history of the Universe. In between he's been mentally ill, got religion, and a mix of the two. (His skill hasn't diminished.) 1968 Last year (I don't mean what they call R&B these days, which is like a mix of Soul and Shyte. And by a strange coincidence that matches exactly what has happened to the Fleetwood Mac brand -- from 60s Blues to Post-Modern Bubblegum. It's a feckin' scandal.)

Zappa was reworking his 60's songs on his last tour. He'd even get the group to play around the mistakes on the original version. The later versions of Trouble Every day were better than the 60s version (I think you'll probably be able to check this on Youtube); he also rewrote the lyrics of Dickie's such an arsehole to include Reagan and some of his policies.
