Spectators making use of umbrellas at Wimbledon would make themselves highly unpopular, I'd have thought. Even if they avoided spearing an eye on each spoke as they put them up, they would block the view of the person behind them. I guess most amateur events don't stop because of a bit of rain, but I suspect that sports played on very wet grass do pose problems because of the risk of slipping, especially at top level when players are worth so much money. There is nothing like the thought of a damages claim to concentrate the mind of a sports ground steward! I was at a Caro Emerald concert with my daughter a couple of weeks ago. It was persisting down with rain, but they made it clear that no umbrellas would be allowed past the gate. Anyone caught with one inside would be ejected. They were vehement. This is her waiting at the VIP entrance. (They relented, just as long as we promised not to use it, which we honoured. The rain stopped before Caro came on, and started again just after she'd finished. Our chips (with mayo, of course) got wet.)

Everso Ah, but there's always something happening in cricket. You've cracked it, Aub: that's the secret — take the cricket out of cricket and it becomes entertaining. And note that even in the actual cricket shots you never actually see the ball. All you need is a good cameraman and 22 mimes (plus umpires) and Bob's your uncle.

Everso Ah, but there's always something happening in cricket. I've heard this one a hundred times, but it never fails to make me laugh.

he's Scottish then! If he had won he would have been British. We were discussing this fact at work in a Inverness supermarket staff room

Scottish, British, Irish, Jamaican - it doesn't matter now, it's depressing. It would be nice to hope with some sort of realism.

Bearing in mind I hate tennis, who's going to watch the women's final? Sharapova? I could clout her. All that noise. Tsk!

Bearing in mind I hate tennis, did anyone watch the men's final today? I did and I have to admit it was good. Except for one thing: Djokovic the Serb bounced his ball between 10 and 14 times every single time he served. I don't know what was worse, watching that or having to listen to Mr. E. counting the bounces out loud before saying "Ridiculous!"
