I'm a real tightwad when it comes to buying them. I don't mind spending money on a present, but cards do what? Sit on the meantlepiece for maybe a week then get binned.
Today I paid just under £2 for a card for my niece, but most were much more than that.

I refuse to darken Clinton Card's doors. What a racket. Seems they can sell a dozen cards for a fiver at Christmas, but for the rest of the year you can pay that just for one card.
I tend to stick to my local independent card shop, which has some nice cards for under a pound. Other than that M & S still sell some cards for a pound. Also, they give you a little ticket that gets stamped every time you buy a card and when it's been stamped six times, you get your next card free (any price card). Their cards are quite nice too.

I hate the prices too. The cheapest ones near me are the National Gallery (British) ones that my local independent bookshop sells for €2 to €2.50. And they are nice. But they don't always do.
Make your own. It's the only way!

No, I try never to go near those sort of shops. Complete rip off. Oh yes, Marks and Spencers does a good range -- and their wrapping paper is often good value compared to other places. And their egg sandwiches.

Oh you lot are just ridiculous. A card is a couple of quid. A couple of sodding quid.

I object to paying a fortune for those schmaltzy verses... I don't mind paying for a nice blank card where I can add my own sarcastic comments ...

There's a lovely card (or there was, don't know if it's still around) that has a cartoon on the front of a grassy hill, and it says on the front "Do you see yourself in this picture?" and inside "No? Then you're the one over the hill" I've never really felt I could send it to anyone, but I know I'd laugh it I received it.

Local card shop has some lovely cards if you want "local" scenery and artists, some nice individual other stuff too. Their Christmas paper is usually fantastic. All bloody expensive though.
Funny you should be mentioning this, OH went into Clintons for a card for her Mum the other day and struggled to find anything as the choice was dire, we went elsewhere to another, smaller chain store and she found one for £2.79 or something silly like that. I couldn't find anything for the friend I was looking for and was just going to give up. Had to get one though so called into this place called "Card Factory" on the way back home, found a card straight away and had to ask the price twice when I went to pay:
It was 59p!
"My kind of shop" said OH on the way out!

Yes, we have a Card Factory in Chelmsford. I often forget about it though.

I'm with the Riot-Meister...wot a bunch of skinflints! ;D
I mean really, if you don't care enough to spend a few quid on a card, you should probably just front up to the person and tell 'em straight...
"you aren't worth £2.39 of my money...now piss off and have a mediocre birthday"

No, no! It's not about the money really. At least, not really. It's just that it seems such a racket. I don't know if I've mentioned this before (I probably have), but I used to vaguely know the sister of the chap who started Clinton Cards. He named the company after his son whose first name is Clinton. This lady, along with her husband, used to organise quiz evenings for our flower club. A lovely couple, and they were given her brother's cast-off cars . However, over the years the company has become so big and expensive and their cards don't reflect the quality you'd expect for the price you pay. I'd pay quite a bit for a really good quality card - something you don't get in most card shops.

There's a model train shop near us that has good cards with pictures of old trains and buses on them, for £1.25. Like this: Or: Can't go wrong, really (unless you accidentally get a Christmas card when you meant to get a birthday card: I see the snow, and don't realise the meaning of it).

I'd spend money on a special anniversary or a wedding because people tend to keep those cards - at least I have., But I refuse to spend momney on a card that will be looked at, maybe put on a mantlepiece for a couple of days, then binned.

Actually, I like funny cards, especially if they're mildly insulting or very rude. But you can only send those to really close friends and relatives, the ones you know will appreciate it.

Not, of course, for weddings, I might add. Or anniversaries.

Pooter: "Are you in the habit of receiving insulting cards?"
Lupin: "Yes, Guv - and of sending them!"
