Today is apparently the day to try something new.
I resisted putting up a thread on the general board because a run through of the Kama Sutra would have got a bit tedious. But something on the radio prompted me to think: well, why not try a new food?
Only I can't think of any we haven't yet sampled.

I heard about these delicacies on some food quiz on R4 yesterday. There are male and female varieties. Not my cup of tea, but one of the foodie drips gushed about them very gushingly. And the mantle. They were in Rye, talking about the local seafood, so I guess you're more or less in the right place.

Have you ever had scallop corals? They usually come with the scallops! I know, but according to the foodie luvvies most people throw them away. I wouldn't know. I don't eat molluscs that much.

Yes, we have scallops sometimes, and do eat the coral....
I admit defeat: we have meat and two veg., with jack's artichoke soup as a starter.
One day we will try sushi...but not today, and certainly not just before my hols.

MY first try at sushi was at the Sony cafe in Soho about 13 years ago. It was a PR do for Beverly Craven. My daughter had won tickets on a local radio phone in.
Good evening apart from the warm fizzy wine, bad sushi and that bloody awful woman who aways wore pink behind me...come on stubbies! the name! the name!!

Beverley Craven ........actually, it's more the memories of that time that it brings back than the songstress herself, but...........

They're nice with lots of white pepper and vinegar on them. Scrape the jelly off though - unless you're into that kind of thing.

You're really selling those jellied eels, Everso. I might even try one myself, and I don't eat fish.

Eels are much better smoked. (No, not like that, aubrey.)

I must confess I haven't eaten jellied eels for some years. I think the last time was at a cousin's christening - it was in the East End, so that was o.k. - and I still liked them then. If you're not a fan of aspic jelly (like Mr. E., who gags at the very thought) then they're probably not for you.

I trawled the BBC Good Food tihingy yesterday and came up with a Beef & Bean hotpot. Should have been mince but I only had steak so I sliced it very thinly. Lots & lots of beans for me.. turned out ok...may add some lentils later..
