It wasn't even a very large one!
This lunchtime it was to be a tuna sandwich, but we were out of the above offending salad item, so I nipped up to the Spar, thinking about begrudging having to pay 99p as I had before. Then! I saw the price had gone up again!
They really are taking the piss! They're quite happy to do two for pound offers on beer and lager but the veg is ridiculous! You can no longer argue that they provide an out of hours service and that they are only a small shop - that's just rot - franchise or not the Spar must have similar if not equal buying power to that of any supermarket, and there are plenty of supermarkets now who offer the same hours as the Spar franchise group.
Where alcohol is concerned it's a case in point - When I think back to my village Mace Store (some of those became Spar over the years) that shop was about the size of the one down the road - and it would have fresh fruit and veg the length of the front window - Know what ours has the length of it's front window?
Crisps.
The area for soft drinks and lager (lots and lots of lager) and wine is in the same area of the shop that in my old village shop was taken up with a delicatessen and fresh sandwiches, the old shop's wine section was one small corner. Chocolate in the Spar fills the same amount of shelf space as the complete section opposite of tea, sugar, tinned stuff, jams, flour, etc. With freezers in between. Even without some of the later trends for food, my local village Mace had three sides of an aisle for that amount of stuff.
So, the government comes up with all these diktats about people getting fat - health warnings on drinks etc when they ought to be giving the food stores a good kicking - and forcing them to keep down the prices of fresh fruit and veg!
