Riot asks,
Bets wonders what makes people seek out celebrity for it's own sake and why the Media can't find more worthy articles to fill the columns around their advertising space.

What makes people seek celebrity? Money and fame have always been powerful motivators. Why can't the media find more worthy articles? Because they are desperately losing sales, and the one thing that puts sales up is the likes of Jade Goody. It seems people want to read aobut her, and will buy the papers. Free market, innit.

P.S. Bets, why are you doing that 'Riot asks' 'Bet wonders' stuff? Have you turned into Toby from JSG?
In which case, I just want you to know that I think it's great when white people marry black people and they have lots of little babies together. And that that is the official stub Crouch line on the matter. Hooray!

Ghandi...I mean Riot (change that avatar please..he may have done wonders for his people but he was entirely sexless) But why are people interested in Jade Goody? I don't, wont and can't get it! I have no interest in what Goody does in private; wether she is ill, dying, a secret transexual (Ok that might grab my interest a bit), but I don't understand why anyone would sit glassy eyed looking at wedding photos of people they don't know, of a wedding to which they weren't invited, and feel they are somehow part of it. OK...I have my celebrity heroes from the past. Hancock, Kenneth Williams, Harold H Corbett, Leonard Rossiter, Arthur Lowe. Yes, it is true I have watched TV biographies and read bios about them, always intrigued by their off screen personas. But these people had something to give, to share. They were crammed with talent, ultimately gifted individuals who entertained millions. What has Goody contributed to the arts and culture she is supposedly representing? This is what I don't understand. Whose more morbid? The cynics or the countless wanting to see how ill she really is? How bald she is. How thin she is. Like the ghouls who decorated the Mall watching Diana's coffin wheel by. I'd rather have a pint with the cynics anyday.

What has Goody contributed to the arts and culture she is supposedly representing? when has Jade ever maintained that she is representing arts and culture entertainment is one thing Chris. may i suggest that Jade Goody, and her illness is doing far more to contribute to the health of women in this country than any comedy star/hero you mention. she is dealing with her situation in the only way she knows how - and the result will be that many women will make sure they go and have their smear test, and make sure they go back if they are required to do so....have the laser treatment, and not die so young.

Betty, oh deary Betty, can't you see? If some people need the Living TV Channel, Jade Goody and The Sun to educate them on health issues, then we are in a much bigger mess than ever I thought. Why is no-one seeing this here?

Why is no-one seeing this here? You say ''educate'', I say 'make it real for them'. We can all 'know' what we should be doing but still not get the reality of it and then someone we relate to or someone we know or someone we like is affected and suddenly we get the relevance to us.

Like the ghouls who decorated the Mall watching Diana's coffin wheel by. That was mass hysteria - a specific type of behaviour.

You have removed the punctuation :- and double !! which lessens the madness effect and added a touch of class by using the quote button.

No. Not obsessed. Interested perhaps. But yes, I do prefer my celebs to have a modicum of talent. Does that make me strange? Perhaps I should be liking less talented types who make it rich by not knowing that Portugal was a country, and being thoroughly unpleasant to an Indian girl?

Not just the befuddled. I know someone very unbefuddled who went for her first smear test yesterday and there is no doubt in my mind that the prevalence of the topic in the news spurred her on to do something she had been putting off merely because she didn't like the idea of it very much.

.... the prevalence of the topic in the news spurred her on tp do something she had been putting off merely because she didn't like the idea of it very much. of course this will prompt women to go and men to badger their women to go. it really is the most undignified test - on a par with men being tested for prostate cancer. if only there were another way
