I'm on BT Broadband and I think some other board members are as well, so I thought I'd let you know about an email I received today which wasn't filtered by BT (oddly enough). Dear Customer, This e-mail has been sent to you by BT to inform you that we were unable to process your most recent payment of bill. This might be due to either of the following reasons:
1. A recent change in your personal information. (eg: billing address, phone) 2. Submitting incorrect information during bill payment process.
Due to this, to ensure that your service is not interrupted, we request you to confirm and update your billing information today by clicking here.
If you have already confirmed your billing information then please disregard this message as we are processing the changes you have made.
Kind regards,
BT Total Broadband team
It looked pretty authentic, except that it called me "Dear Customer", and wanted me to link to another website, which asked for security info. I googled it and it appears it's a phishing email. I get hundreds of emails from various building societies and banks requesting me to link to their site (all phishing emails) but this is the first time I've received one purporting to come from BT. I'd like to get hold of one of these shitty little bastards who try this sort of thing on. What I wouldn't do.

It's a real give-away when you are not on their service or do not bank with them.

Anything addressed to "Dear Customer" rather than my name gets alarm bells ringing.
Also I'd never click on a link supplied in an email from someone I either didn't know or thought to be spurious.

Even if I get sent a link by a friend I check with them first to find out what it is. Otherwise I click no links that I haven't looked for first (or are just news links)

Indeed, never click on links in emails.
If you are a BT customer and need to do this you can do it via their website you dont need to ever click on links in emails.
Almost all companies realise this now and rarely put links in their emails and will always make available whatever you need to do through your account on their website which you can log into without ever clicking on any links in emails.

I have had one of these as well. Dead giveaway as I am not with BT.
On a similar theme has anyone else noticed that a lot of similar emails are being supposedly from banks?

I don't really get much spam, I just know what to do when I do receive it... I did once receive a genuine snailmail scam letter though...claiming I had won around six hundred thousand euros in the "spanish lottery", I really should've kept it, they are quite rare in the age of electronic scams. AH

Nowadays I have a separate hotmail account for just such stuff, but I was naive in my early on-line days and used my BT email address that I download into Outlook.

BT of course have quite a rigorous Spam folder on your account webspace - I've had to check up on there frequently when obviously normal post gets lost in there.
I don't get a lot with the Post Office Either - so I imagine that they must have one too - after all - they are only BT under a different name, but I'm blowed if I can find it!
