Of course, the root of the matter is that the English have never managed to work out that England and Britain, or even England and the UK, are not the same geographical entity.
The arrogance of the majority . . .

And sport is SUPPOSED to transcend politics etc. Yes, but it's not supposed to transcend national boundaries like this. Why not go the whole hog and have a 'Team EU' in the Olympics? Or a 'Team EU' in the football world cup? That's the logical extension of your position. In fact, maybe we shouldn't have sport based on international competitions at all. Maybe we should just abolish the nation state and live under one world Government.

REVISION: It's not one of the stupidest and most offensive things I've hard in a long time. What am I talking about? I read JSG! So, in the interests of accuracy, it's stupid and offensive, but not necesarily the most stupid and offensive thing I've heard in a long time. Post in haste, revise at leisure . . Barney has written the following. "That murderous pair of thugs,Adams and McGuinness should give up their perverted ambitions to be politicians, stop holding the UK to ransom with their demands of "Do as we say or it's back to the bombings." and f--- off , preferably to roast in hell.
Then Northern Ireland can return to being a proper democracy and be a complete part of the UK" Why, indeed, are the English so bloody arrogant?

The minority appear to be the English FA. Yes. But the English are the numerical majority, which is what I meant. Because they're the biggest, the demands and feelings of the smaller nations are to be ignored. That's kind of the definition of arrogance . .

Well, Barney is an ass at the best of times and an abusive ass at the worst. I saw McGuinness last night speaking out against these atrocities. I'm not a fan of the man, and I can see why many people feel they need to hold their noses in order to do deals with him, but if you believe in human redemption, that a leopard can sometimes change its spots, then McGuinness deserves respect for his courage in speaking out in the firm way he did yesterday. The CIRA and RIRA lunatics are gunning for him . . probably literally.

I've never been able to understand why England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales can't each enter their own teams in the Olympics. We manage it for football and rugby, why not for all sport?

McGuiness is IRA, nuff said. But. They are both now fully committed to working through politics and democracy and working with their loathed opposition to keep peace and they are both respected by the people who have chosen then as their representatives and have both utterly condemned the recent killings. It's not them doing this. Why doesn't Barney say 'let's hand the place back to the Irish so that it can become a real democracy'? Why does he call their desires to work through politics 'perverted'? Racist, nationalist, arrogant Englishman, that's why.

Also, I feel this thread is a little bit -ist, frankly.
When you say "Why are the English so arrogant?" are you including all English people, Riot?
If so, is it o.k. for me to start a thread asking why are all Muslims so keen on terrorism?

I can't understand why olympic football is such a nationalist plank when all the other sports are played under the GB title. I mean, I can understand that their might be implications for FIFA teaming but not the offence of a nation bit. The Scottish played for GB when they went curling(?), didn't they? or didn't they?

Right. So the English FA riding rough-shod over the stated and explicit wishes of the Scottish FA, the Welsh FA and the Northern Irish FA is just fair enough and not at all arrogant. Gosh. With that kind of attitude still in existence I can't understand how we lost the empire! The English FA are not doing this, it is not them who decided that there should be a football team representing GB in the Olympics. I see no link between what the English FA are doing and arrogance, and I agree with housesparrow. It is the British Olympic Association/"Westminster" who are pushing for a GB team presumably to try to win more medals and to make sure we are as represented as possible in our home olympics.
