Absolutely bonkers isn't it! Almost with a Rhyming quality - but it conjures up images of late middle aged ladies battling over their children's show entries, grizzled old farmers and little old men guarding over their prize Marrows! It could only happen in this country surely?

When I was "Newsagenting" in the early 90's - it was the peaktime of Viz sales. We would have about 60 to 90 of them each week - Being in the town centre we were apparently on a par with WHSmith for sales.

Yes, the way that the Morecambe-Leeds service has been decimated is a disgrace - it was once served by 'Club trains' for the comfort & convenience of the mill-owners, of course. Nowadays it's bloody wretched 'Pacers' - how are the mighty fallen...

In fact, NR wanted to single it, but West Coast at Carnforth kicked up a stink about it. As it is, there is a 24 mile block section, since the closure & demolition of Wennington 'box...

I first went over the S & C in 1971 - "Thames-Clyde Express", a 'Peak' on the front & a fabulous meal in the Restaurant Car.

Last time was 1993 with 'Blue Peter' - Bradford-Carlisle & return. Superb!

I must do it again soon.

Whether I go down to Preston or "over the top" at Carnforth It still takes around two hours to Leeds. Yet (arguably) you could probably do it in an hour by car! We (or I probably) have been toying with going over to York for a day (there's a good bike shop there amongst all the history bits - see, I've got my priorities sorted!) Best hope is going on a day excursion with one of the local tour companies - 'cos it's about 3 hours by rail!! Bloody Beeching - he didn't believe anyone wanted or needed to travel "Cross Country"!

The closure of the Morecambe Leeds route came that close they were discussing "Last Rail Tours" in the local paper at one point. What intrigues me the most is why Lune Valley line was axed in the first place and not that one? I presume it was down to the population area it covered - thought as a West-East link the Lune route would have been quicker I'd have thought.

Talking of Beeching - Thursday week 9pm BBC4tv Ian Hislop "Off the Rails" should be good.

Dent station was up for auction a few years ago, not sure what it fetched in the end - but that would be some place to live! You'd have to get your supplies in in winter all right!

I think that the line from Wennington to Carnforth was saved because at the time there were freight considerations - there were large exchange siding areas at Carnforth; also Lancaster Council wanted the Greyhound Bridge for a road, & they had plans for Green Ayre's site.

As a Midland man I have to say that I'm biased, of course

The other line that should have been kept went from Clapham to Low Gill - ideal for diversionary traffic. Still, the viaduct at Low Gill is still there, & IIRC there are no other major works, so who knows?

Found a website just up my street the other day - the 1940's Ordinance Surveys scanned online! Great stuff - It was the old maps we had at home that started me off in my "Old Rail Line" Interest. Not that clear in execution but good stuff nevertheless.....

A few years ago I cycled from Tunbridge Wells to Guildford - for 70% of the journey using the old rail lines - and this was before the fashion for converting them had started so a lot of it was riding over ballast-ey gravel for some way. So that was TW to East Grinstead - Three Bridges then train to Christ's Hospital, then back on the bike to Guildford.

Oh my god. Mr. E. dragged my to the Railway Museum in York last week. He said my face was a picture when we were listening to a young chap describe how the steam engine works.
