i picked some today, collecting sprogg from school, they are black and juicey and perfect with a bramley apple as a crumble ,i had and a 4 0z butter to 8oz flour with a handful of demerra sugar, because the coarse grains make it loverly and crunchy, bake the usual way and serve while warm/hot. not straight out of the oven, cos you'll burn your mouth and with some cream from the fridge it makes a perfect autumn treat after your posh cottage pie Patrick ;D

I was looking for Blackberries t'other day without any luck. Best place here is a footpath up by the river - unfortunately they'd cut them back really harshly last year and there wasn't that many there either!

shame don't they know its free food the supermarkets charge a fortune for their blackberries and they are imported and we have home grown native ones that are free, just make sure you don't pick any low down and it must be before the first frost, cos they belong to the devil i am told

Too right - I must remember to take a bag tomorrow
Why none low down though Selsey? Peed on by dogs perhaps?
Some people aren't keen on picking berries from the roadside because of the fear of pollution from cars.
Most of the berries I've picked have been visited by flies. Either way, bake em and no-one will die.

I think it's to do with rats and that disease in their urine that kills you.

Next year you'll get pounds. Years ago there were a few brambles near our house. Mr. E. cut them right back and the following year I picked 15 pounds of blackberries (we ate them in crumbles for months and months). Fab.

Inside they were selling them by the punnet load. Crazy.

I think it's to do with rats and that disease in their urine that kills you. You need to take a walking stick with a crooked handle for reaching up and pulling down those really tall branches, you know the ones, with the great big juicy blackberries on. A couple of weeks back Mr. stood in a load of stinging nettles (he had long trousers on) and managed to reach up to pick the best blackberries. Mmmmmm

Are blackberries and brambles the same thing? I'm never very sure, and I don't normally like to ask in case I show my ignorance, but here I'm among friends.

I think the bramble is the twig the blackberries dangle from

When I lived Dahn Sarf - we were nestled just below the North Downs - where you could find acres of Blackberry bushes hidden away from anyone - and without that added roadside pollution as well. There was another lane where Dad and I would collect sloes for gin - sadly the last time I was over there the hedges that we went to are covered in housing estate now.

I've never been able to make my mind up whether sloes are put on this earth to disguise the ghastliness of inferior gin, or whether poor gin is only made to give people a reason to pick sloes.

It confuses me too, now that you have been brave enough to admit it I feel brave enough too. This is what I've decided: Yes. And no. It depends where you live and how the terms are used colloquially. Brambles and Bramble Hedges etc are the plants themselves and Blackberries are the fruit but you can go Bramble picking to pick the fruit and you can eat Bramble Jelly. It's wild.

Apple season too! That heady time of year when Food columns countrywide wonder how in supermarkets based in traditional apple country where the choice, type and flavour of apple is plenty (South West, South East) they still only manage to stock four types of apple!

Mr. E. and I go blackberry picking every year and even keep some old plastic ice cream tubs in the boot of the car just in case... Locally, we have some good ones on the walk to the cemetery (where my parents now reside). We get quite miffed if some other bugger's been there before us and got the glut of them. This year we didn't do quite so well - probably two or three pounds over the course of a few weeks.

Took a walk along the river the other weekend, naturally the BB bushes had gone, but they still aren't at the nice vigorous bulging size they were four years ago! I fear that the council are being just a little too enthusiastic in their pruning these days!
