...Don't watch that, watch this! The "Heavy Heavy Monster Sound" of one of the greatest bands ever is on it's way back...starting with a deluxe 2 disc remastered and expanded re-issue of their first album "One Step Beyond". Available this October! More super-slick remasters to follow in 2010...fecking awesome! AH

They had a good crowd at Glastonbury. Is "Remastering" always a good thing though?

It is when band members and original producers are involved, Thomas Dolby's remastered "the flat earth" & "golden age of wireless" albums were personally overseen by himself, the result was a proper remastering of pretty old albums, they really do sound fantastic...not just some tweaks just to make it sound "a bit louder", which seems to be the cheap way out.
The recent U2 remasters are another example of a good job, personally overseen by "The Edge", and once again, a lot more than just volume tweaks (they are sonically splendid, especially the older stuff like "boy", "war" & "october").
I believe that the Radiohead remasters are also properly done (which I will be purchasing before the year is out). But the Radiohead stuff is pretty modern and probably was just tweaked a bit, not a hell of a lot wrong with the originals....but they have added a massive amount of bonus material to the new releases, great VFM.
Although I am not a fan of the Beatles, I've been told that their remastered back-catalogue also sounds wonderful.
Edit: Most remastered albums usually come in cracking packaging, with tons of bonus material as well, the U2 & Radiohead editions each have an extra CD and a DVD full of rarities and videos...I love all that extra that stuff!

I remember where I've read it now. Yello have redone a lot of theirs and most of the reviews say they haven't done it very well.

I've heard complaints about "The Doors" SACD remasters, then again, I've heard really positive reviews as well. I suppose there will always be purists out there who feel that the original should be sacrosanct, then again, nobody is forcing them to buy these re-issues...they are an option for collectors/completists or for new audiences who don't own the originals. I have three copies of the La's only album...the original CD, the remastered and expanded CD and the new remastered and super expanded 2x CD box set...nobody forced me to buy them, each one of them was well worth the money when released IMO. Hell, I have four copies of "the Joshua Tree" (original vinyl, original CD, 2xCD remaster and the wonderfully decadant 2xCD + DVD, book and post cards deluxe box set...). AH
