Some excellent chap or chappess has uploaded the entire magnificent series on You Tube. Brian Blessed: magnificent. Derek Jacobi: magnificent Sian Phillips: magnificent John Hurt as Caligula....terrifying and yep..magnificent. Quite simply they don't make 'em like this anymore.

I'm going to treat myself to the box set too. Sian Phillips is great too as Livia...anyone got in her way she had them poisoned. Even her own son and husband. Dysfunctional families eh?

I have the boxed set, I really liked it when it was on the telly me too - i watch it once a year. i remember when it was on telly - i was at school and we all loved it. another brilliant series on in the mid seventies was Cakes and Ale - apparently Somerset Maugham's own favourite.

I hadn't heard of Cakes and Ale
Have either of you watched "Rome". The first series took a little while for me to get into, but I liked how it ended and the 2nd series was very good, I thought. Both had the "grim" look that "I, Claudius" had

i LOVE Rome - again - i watch the two series once a year - (while painting!) i cannot believe that it's been ditched. the quality (acting/ sets/ costume etc) was fantastic.
why are great shows so often cancelled?
it's one of life's mysteries.

Watched the rerun of I Clavdiv last year. I remember it the first time around but it never really attracted me - and I was a little young for it - put it this way - The image of all their heads cut off and lying about stays with me still! (Missed that episode this time around.)
Years ago a friend of mine nicked a box set of Somerset Maugham's short stories from the schools jumble sale collection, thinking I'd be interested - and as a 12/13 year old, I lapped them up. Enjoyed the reading of his Biog on Radio 4 last week too. I think his work is underrated by the TV people. Though some of the short stories were dramatised a while ago, because I remember them doing "The Hairless Mexican"

I Claudias was a gripping series, my son now 20 was very into Roman history and has various books on the subject, the ones i like that i have been reading are the Simon Scarrow ones about to characters Cato and Marco brilliant books and well researched for the historical content even though the characters Cato and Marco are probably fictional, the invasion of Briton series and the exploits in the Middle East are fascinating. But whats more interesting about that time in history is that nothing changes, corruption politcal intrigue, religion and a cosmopoliton Rome at the heart of the Empire, complete with criminals and immigrants.

It was good (though now you have to allow for imagining a crowd scene, for eg), and I especially remember the danger of it, especially when Caligula was around; but a big appeal for a 14-15 year old boy was... well, you know.
(The books are very good, as well.)
