The old laptop died last night. The hard drive finally expiring. So, as soon as I get the hang of this shiny new widescreen Hewlett Packard thingy I may look in later! It's just taken over an hour to get it to recognise my wireless set up

You must be very brave. It's always a bit scarey when you start using a new computer.

Nearly there! What astonishes me though is why you don't get back up discs anymore! Chirpy taxi driver on the way back was complaining about this, especially when the back up discs he'd made himself didn't work and the shop wanted to charge him full price for a replacement!
The screen on this, in comparison with the laptop is retina-burining bright! Still working out how to address this!
Loving the "Mouse Wheel" though!

It is very annoying you dont tend to get backup/windows cds with a PC anymore.
Usually the backup comes from a partition on the hard drive which is just for this purpose, but then this backs the computer back up to a rubbish state with a pile of crap software the manufacturer has decided you should want.
The first thing I ever do when I get a new PC is reformat it and reinstall windows!

Yes, the back up is the disc partition - and surprise surprise you can't "explore" it (as far as I can see) to be able to find out what's on it. So far I've made a start up disc and backed up the user files to my external hard drive. Any other suggestions?? (without reformatting that is! I've done more than enough of that trying to ressurect the laptop! We settled on the Pavillion Slimline 5206/8 in the end. Cheap and cheerful (fingers crossed) - but still superior to the laptop that was three times more expensive.

Generally you dont need to do anything as you can restore the computer from the backup partition of your drive (usually by pressing something as it boots up, it will be in your manual). The reason why you cant explore the backup is because it is compressed and hidden away . Getting a new PC is great, I bet everything runs ten times quicker than with your old one.

It is rather lovely. Just like a crisp new message board! Funny that Windows gets more Apple-like with each generation. I still keep reaching down the bottom of the keyboard for the mouse-pad though.

I've just acquired a 24" tft screen and it's amazing. Coming back to this laptop, everything seems so small.

If you have space it is well worth getting a nice large lcd monitor. They are really cheap nowadays too.
I have a 21" monitor at home and I am away with work this week and working on my small laptop monitor is so annoying.

We now have a twenty incher (Ooh-er Missus!) The colours are very good - We have discovered that the photos we thought OK before, are absolutely fabulous now!!
We had the same thing when we were forced to get a new video recently, albeit ex-display stuff from ebay. For the first time in eight years we have been able to watch videos ten years old or more, which our £240 worth of Philips video wouldn't play properly from new!
