I don't really understand the idea of comfort food - I've got food that I like and food that I don't like (couscous especially). Anything I like can be comfort food, really.
But yes, egg and chips! Or just chips, maybe in a bag, and with bread (white, with butter) and red sauce and vinegar and salt. (I know a lot of things there aren't good for you - I'm not supposed to have chip shop chips at all these days - but I don't see why chips aren't regarded more highly as food. Maybe it's a class thing: something that the working class eat so much of can't be "Good." Oysters used to be the same - they only became gourmet food when they became more scarce and expensive; before that they were only really eaten by poor people and cats).
And mashed potato! (I can't remember who it was that said that Sausage and Mash is just an excuse to eat mashed potatoes. Dam' right, though.)

It's that whole sensory experience really, with a dollop of nostalgia thrown in! I love mash and would have it every day depending on what I was serving it with of course. I rather put Best Beloved off it by making too much of the stuff when we were first together - but one way she likes is mixing spring onions in when I use it as the base for my (or rather 'Rick Stein's') Cod in Soy Butter Sauce.

It had to be invented when she stopped eating anything during that 2-3 year old fussy stage. Smooth mashed potato mixed with an egg and some grated cheese, grated cheese on top, baked gently in the oven for half an hour. It comes out all airy because of the egg. A meal in itself too. She'd love the bacon bits idea.

Mashed potato has to be just right. No lumps whatsoever (school mashed potato turned Mr. E. off it for life - he won't eat it even if I swear on our children's lives that there are no lumps). I recently treated myself to a potato ricer. I used to pound it through a sieve but you have to be careful not to work it too hard or it turns out gloopy.
Add lots of butter and milk (or cream as Alpha suggests). Fabamundo!

Homemade soup with lots of vegetables and a dash of cream to finish is wonderful. Or, alternatively, Heinz Tomato soup. Somehow nothing beats it for cosy winter tea times. Eat with buttered toast and preferably watch Blue Peter at the same time.
