...and I had no idea. perhaps I saw his name on a thread somewhere but it didn't register... I only heard during the week when Radio 4 trailed its tribute programme. I have a personal sadness about it because he was involved with so many of the programmes I laughed at, from KYTV (Radio Active) to Father Ted and the seminal HH's G 2the G. RIP Mike Flex. If you missed it, tribute programme was on Sat at 8pm. Real Player: File: Open: rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio4/2000_sat.ra

I was having this conversation with myself just this morning! Having heard just at the last minute that Ed Reardon was back today, I went to the RT Radio part and saw the details of the Perkins prog on there! 55 eh?! He had talent - and a talent for spotting talent - but aside from Radio Active and KYTV - he was better suited to producing and writing than performing. Don't know if you remember but Channel 4 ran a pilot series based on Just a Minute with him in the chairman's seat - the whole thing was just not funny sadly - that was the last time I saw him in front of the camera. Most of the shows he helped put together; H2G2 and those above I always listened to with my Dad - and we mimicked and played out the scenes for days afterwards.* Publicity shot of Radio Active cast (l-r): Michael Fenton Stevens, Philip Pope, Angus Deayton, Geoffrey Perkins and Helen Atkinson-Wood.You don't get many comedies lasting eight years or so! * I've only just read the last para of your post after I'd written that - SNAP! sort of!

Yes...still young..but he was run over by a truck while on his way to a medical...what a 'comedy' way to go.

I don't remember. I recall Parsons chairing a BBC version of Just a Minute. Likewise, it just didn't transfer to screen, especially as they asked more TV celebrities - Su Pollard ffs - doing slapstick ffs- I still haven't really recovered from the trauma of it. Perkins thought up the idea that became Mornington Crescent!

I don't think it was Just a Minute - I've a nagging feeling that it was a News Quiz type show and they just didn't get the mix right - Maybe it was a pilot of "Have I Got News For You"

Patrick. Was it, in fact, Countdown?

NOOOOOOoooooooo!!!!!! Not that! Perleaasssee!
It was definitely GP. Definitely Channel 4 and it ran for about 6 shows and he looked very uncomfortable doing it. My Guess is it was a version of HIGNFY that didn't work for them - so GP asked his old mate Deayton to do it when they'd taken the idea to the BBC.

Hmmm. Reading that I see now that there were a lot of things he did that I didn't laugh at.

It's not there! Must have been banished to the dungeons of History! (Deliberately probably!) .........and we'll gloss over his involvement with Game On, My Family and Lee Evans too! In a way you can see a "growing up curve" thing that we all go through eventually (hopefully not!) One minute you're enjoying the irreverence and silliness of the likes of Father Ted and Chelmsford 123 (Now I thought that was one of his, being one of the "Hat Trick" family) and before you know it - you're fancying the look of that nice beige cardi in the window of Dunn & Co and settling down on a Sunday to My Family and Last of the Summer Wine, and contemplating voting Conservative for the first time in your life!

I've just seen this. That is a shame. And I forget that Deayton had a career before HIGNFY. Shame isn't it when they become all celebified and doing duff shows for ITV 1.
