A forthcoming documentary supposedly on Channel Four.
The history is simple...A family called the Defoes moved in ...Ronald Defoe Jr shot and killed six members of his family at the house...his father, his mother, and siblings.
In 1975 the Lutzes moved in. Knowing full well the history of the house. They later admitted to concocting stories of ghosts, knowing how Ronald Defoe had in court has said that the house was 'evil' and 'haunted' and had caused him to murder to his family. Defoe alleged to have 'heard voices' insisting he killed his loved ones.
The Lutzes wrought the attention of a journalist and writer Jay Anson who believed the couple, or at least was in some collusion with the couple and saw an opportunity to exploit the situation.
The novel The Amityville Horror was published in 1977...and history took its course.
The house on Ocean Drive has been infamous ever since.

I once saw a book called Amityville III in 3d - it wasn't, unless you count the thickness of the pages and the ink.
Stephen King called it property-owning horror - "God, think how much it would cost to get that fixed!"
All made up, of course. Like The Exorcist.

Amityville III? was that the one known as Amityville III: the evil escapes ? I used to qwuite like that one.. it was all about a yard sale of the stuff from the original Amityville house, and this lady purchased a lamp that turned out to be all full of bad spirits and stuff due to belonging to the evil Amityville house. It used to glow in an evil way, that lamp, whenever it was up to a bit of skulduggery. good though, it used to come on even when it werent plugged in. could save a fortune on electricity bills with one of them lamps. I personally reckon it would be worth putting up with a bit of evil here n there abouut the house, for a reduced electricity bill.

I remember reading the book and I've never been so shite-scared in my life. I was almost too frightened to turn the page. Of course, had I known it was all made up (goddam those Lutzes) it probably wouldn't have affected me so much.

You can get his collected ghost stories on Wordsworth (budget publishers) for £1.00, usually from remainder shops - most remainder shops have a section of Wordsworth books. He didn't write very much - maybe 30 stories - but they are some of the best ghost stories ever written. I really wish I had never read them, so that I could read them for the first time.

Hopefully reel in the bag soon for the real Amityville. But a real home should always be where the heart is...nothing more true. A place to feel completely safe...completely loved...completely ... I yearn to give someone a home...my home...a place they can always come to...come rain or shine. A place to kick off your shoes and feel loved and safe. Food...a brandy or three...a warm comfy bed....A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN BE TOTALLY YOU AND STILL BE HUGGED. HOME.

It's the place that when you go there, they've got to let you in.
