I just found a very interesting website: boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm?p=.htmwhich gives the top 100 films "domestic grosses adjusted for ticket price inflation". I'm happy to announce that "Gone With The Wind" is still top of the list, with "Star Wars" a close second. "Avatar" is 21 in the list. Pah! (although I've heard it's a very good film)

This list is pure BS! Where the fuck is the timeless, sweeping epic "Karate Kid" on this list? The Kobra Kai Dojo have obviously sabotaged this poll out of spite...many crane kicks coming their way... AH

Maybe we should have a 'best movie' survivor game once we finish the Disney one. Or maybe we have finished the Disney one. I've sort of forgotten about it.
I'm very pretentious. My two favourite films ('Delicatessen' and 'Goodbye Lenin') are foreign language films.
I don't actually like movies that much. I watch sit-coms, glossy American dramas and documentaries.
However, i did go to the cinema recently (for the first time since 'Sex and the City' came out on film) to see something called 'It's Complicated' with Meryl Streep and Alex Baldwin. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. It was a pleasant way to spend 2 hours with a hangover in Dublin when the bus tour was cancelled. I even managed a little nap in the middle of it without losing the plot.

88/100
interesting that despite all the hype, only one of the Harry Potter films makes the list.
though hardly surprising as the couple my children made me watch were pretty bad.

Oh yes! Harry Potter borrrrrrrinnnnnggggggg Ev, darling, we really must stop agreeing like this. People will talk. IMO, Harry Potter is very like Star Wars and The City of London -- little or no actual substance, lots of gormless and/or evil characters, oodles of smoke and mirrors, makes lots of money.

Everso, that is a very interesting list! I've seen 68ish of them but only 18 at the cinema. I note that my cinema going years appear to have been a couple of years in my teens and then a lot of films involving bringing kids to the cinema. I forgot how useful the cinema is for entertaining your kid. 88/100 interesting that despite all the hype, only one of the Harry Potter films makes the list. though hardly surprising as the couple my children made me watch were pretty bad. Yes. I liked the books but fell asleep during the 2nd film, didn't waste my money on the rest and let other people take Mini-Trub along. In the same vein, also interesting is that Toy Story and Shrek, both wonderful films imo, didn't make the list but their sequels did. I think that speaks volumes about how ungood HP was (less people returned) and how good the other two were despite not making the list (people saw them on video and didn't want to wait to see the next installment?). Costal, I feel the same way about Avatar, I still don't know what it's about really, but I've just heard that it's 3D so I think I might go for the cool glasses. Cool like bowling shoes. I saw Jaws 3D when it came out and I have a vague memory that it was utter rubbish but I also have great memories of screaming when the arm flew out at you.

Yes, that's what you want out of a film really.
But I really hated Delicatessan.
I don't hold with the definition of most successful film as the one most people went to see. Star Wars is ok, but it isn't really that good, as SF. More like a WW2 dog-fight film - the space ships wouldn't move like that, or make any noise; and you wouldn't see lasers in space. But Spitfires might. So, on that level, not very sucessful at all.
