Wow! That settles it -- I'm off to the lab to get on with those time-machine experiments I've been neglecting. First task -- eliminate all Lambretta and Vespa activity from the pages of history (must remember to pick up a Moto-Guzzi while I'm then, and a matched pair of Italian leather jackets).

Talking of 1967 . . . It was hot that day. If you haven't seen the gorge of the river Rhine, put it on your list of must-do's. Schön. (My companion had a shit Instamatic "camera".)

OOH Weyland, you are a bit of a eyeful aren't you. I was a try-hard bikie chick for a while, maybe we should have a thread about the virtues of the AJS -v- BSA, the dear old Velocette and the ever trusty Triumph Bonneville..... Lily -- forty years have gone by. I've had BSA, Ariel, and Triumph motorcycles, in that order. And a nasty little Honda thing (for cheap commuting, long ago). Right now I have a Bonneville. I'm looking for a 1950s Triumph SpeedTwin.

It was never to be. Love the skinny jeans! Those Instamatics really were crap, it's true. My photo was taken at a dinner and dance by a professional photographer so it's quite clear, but in those days most people only owned a box Brownie or, if they were "lucky" an Instamatic (I remember someone bought Mr. E. one for his 21st birthday). I have loads of photos taken in the early 70s that don't stand up to scanning and enlarging. What a shame.

Joe Orton's diary covers the period when the Instamatic first came out (or was due to come out) and the first thing he says about them is that they'd be good for home-made pornography.

''Lily -- forty years have gone by. ""
I don't care. I just know you have improved with age.
I have driven (illegally) a BSA bantam (250cc) and was offered the chance to drive a 650cc Bonneville, the bloke must have been off his bloody head I was only16 and a complete airhead. But he said, ""go on,drive it round the car park"" but I daren't. I couldn't even hold it to start the bloody thing. It was thrilling, being on the back of the guys bikes. No helmet laws in those days. We just wore shorts and tiny tee shirts, hair blowing in the wind, and barefoot. Insane.

One guy gave me a lift home late one night. His bike was a 750 Triumph. He was a huge bloke and there wasn't much room for (luckily tiny)me on the back. He broke all speed limits and I was terrified. He couldnt hear me and I could feel that I was going to fall off the back. In the end I stayed on by wrapping my arms round him, but that didnt work cos he was too wide and the wind had made his leather jacket too big for my arms to go round, so I bit a huge chunk of his leather jacket and held on with my teeth. I was terrified. It was exhilarating but I can't believe how stupid it was when I look back. I was 16, he was 25.
