I've just discovered these two - I'd seen Franco's films listed in horror dictionaries, and even seen one or two; but I didn't know that the woman who starred in most of his films also worked as his assistant and editor and writer and even co-director, and that they are still living together now. She was doing nude scenes well into her fifties, but sometimes didn't appear in the films at all, depending on what was needed
The films...
Franco did all types of exploitation films - horror, porn, horror/porn, women in prison, porn remakes of US Tv programmes, weird erotic spy adventure films - well, not all sorts - pretty much just one or two sorts if you get down to it.
There are some stunningly inept passages - like a scene that was acted, not filmed, in slow motion, and not acted very well either - and a fair bit of the vaguely pretentious dialogue that you often get in translated horror films; but the films usually have a nice atmosphere of a decaying Europe, and a surrealistic feeling that comes from this, and from the dialogue: nothing seems real, and in a good way - it is hard to imagine these films actually being made, in the way that it is hard to imagine that some pieces of music were actually written and performed. Exploitation cinema at its greatest!
