On a more serious note.....
"Traditional university degrees may be radically overhauled, with thousands more students studying part-time, employers funding degrees and universities forced to reveal what benefit they actually give to students.
The government is also considering a US-style system in which dropouts could use the credits for courses they had done if they wanted to resume education later. The traditional academic year, with its long holidays, might be scrapped at some universities to suit part-time students who wish to enrol all year round. "
It irritates me that we have this "Rabbit in the headlights" approach to anything "US". They have some excellent education systems and standards in Europe - yet our lot can't be arsed to go there! Far more enjoyable to get a freebie across the pond, in their mind.
Blair for example was getting all excited about a religious backed sex education philosophy - supported by Bush - that had he hung around we may well have ended up getting foisted on our teenagers - all about the "withdrawal" method etc. Never mind the fact that it's some European countries with the lowest rate of teenage pregnancy, in the world.
Every July and August now - our newspaper is full of nauseating pictures of teenagers in dicky suits and gowns as they celebrate their "High School Prom" - Excuse me whilst I vomit - What the hell's wrong with the "End of Term Disco" eh? It's just a sign of the shallowness today when everything has to have "A Label" to make it the thing to do.
By all means reform our Education System - but how about talking to the people who participate in it and teach it and work with them to find the best way of doing things, rather than trying to fob off some off the peg idea and make it fit our way of life!
I notice a reference to an increased role for "Employers" to get involved - I expect this will eventually lead to an integration - nay - a privatisation of some of the universities - so they don't have to be paid for (by the government) at all! - Just a wild suggestion!
