uk.news.yahoo.com/elections/news/article/cameron-reclaim-english-flag-from-bnp/b7c9559bbe2a8f432946f73ee0cf01e5Check out this link. It's a story about how the Tories are wanting to reclaim the 'English flag' from the BNP illustrated by . . the Union flag. Not the English flag at all. I've really had enough of this General Election. As if it's not bad enough that the leaders debate for the UK election seems to spend most of its time discussing English issues, and no other parties except the parties who are big in England are allowed to participate. They're using the phrase 'the 3 big parties'. In Scotland, these are NOT the 3 big parties. Then they're saying . .oh well, only these parties have a chance of being PM, but not a single one of their parties is standing in every UK seat. Rub the Celtic nations' noses in it . . you don't count in the UK. When we say 'The UK' we really mean 'England'. It's enough to make me vote SNP . . .

Might that just be a mistake by the news journos though Riot. Mistaking the Union Jack for the English flag. So so so many make that dreadful mistake. Note how many Union Jacks you see supporting Engerrland in the forthcoming World Cup. You'll see many.

You have your own Scottish Parliament. I wish we had an Aquitaine Parliament.

Eleanor of Aquitaine is one of my favourite historical heroines.
(Mind you, there aren't really that many women featuring by name in history pre- the 20th century, so it's quite a narrow field.)
There NEEDS to be an English Parliament. The asymmetic devolution and all the absurdities it throws up needs to change.
But only the Lib Dums seem to have this as part of their platform (and I don't even know if it's in their manifesto.) It's enough to make you vote for Nick Clegg for President.

I would probably agree but, having lived in France for 35 years, my interest is somewhat detached. I don't take much interest in French politics either, except to understand that Sarkozy is a clown.

Rub the Celtic nations' noses in it . . you don't count in the UK. When we say 'The UK' we really mean 'England'. Not me, Riot. I'm English (but a quarter Irish), and I'm very fussy about the English/British thing. You'd've loved a phone-in they had on R5 this morning, about being English. Such a subject always brings the dregs of England out of their padded cells. Most of them kept saying British, meaning English, and one stupid cow was going on about Elizabeth I starting the English language -- "or was it Henry VIII?" she frothed. That would be Henry Tudor, the famous Welshman. Makes me puke. But it's all superficial in any case. I'm a Geordie, and that's that. I'd vote SNP in your shoes.

have great trouble explaining this to my French friends, most of whom think that Great Britain is part of England. Something to do with Brittany being Bretagne and GB being Grand Bretagne. When it gets to The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, they shrug their shoulders and order more Ricard.

Their view of the UK is much the same, only it would be Bols dubbel jenever. Proost!
