Someone has stated that YouTube is a time machine. I have just spent an hour listening to Ivor Cutler, Henry Hall and the original Teddy Bears Picnic. I spent part of yesterday evening with the Travelling Willburies. He could be right! Off to find Jack Parnell now.

Alan, when I was a little girl we had a 78 record by April Stevens called "How Could Red Riding Hood?" (the flip side was "You said you'd do it are you gonna?"). Of course, the old 78 went the way of all old 78s and got smashed to smithereens at some point.
A few weeks back I found it on Youtube and I couldn't have been happier.
I still remembered all the words as well.

Was it as good as you remembered?
I was really pleased to find Cockney Rebel on TOTPs doing a rearranged Mr Soft - something I never saw at the time, even though I was a huge fan, due to a neurotic girlfriend - and I resented not having seen it for 30+ years. (It is really good, though.)

(It is really good, though.) It absolutely was! I discovered, though, from Googling it, that it had been written in 1926 and banned for it's suggestive lyrics! As a little girl in the 1950s I loved the song which had been re-done by April Stevens Here are some of the lyrics: How could Little Red Riding Hood Have been so very good And still keep the wolf from the door ? Job ? Father ? Mother ? No ! She had none So where in the world did the money come from ? I need to ask it : Who filled her basket ? The story books never tell They say that she found a wolf in Granny’s bed With a great big sun bonnet pulled over his head But sometimes I wonder what she found instead How could Little Red Riding Hood Have been so very very good And still kept the wolf from the door ? When I was about 6 or 7 we were at a wedding and there was a band. I actually got up and sang this song over the microphone! My mother obviously never realised the lyrics were suggestive.

The people who banned it must have had dirty minds, though. Much dirtier than yours.

Ivor Cuttler was deeply messed up fellow. AH Really? I don't think he was; well, no more than anyone else (which leaves a wide leeway, I admit).

He had a very off-beat sense of humour that I found very funny and still do.

I was very surprised and very pleased when my brother told me that our 6 year old cousin had been playing IC to him; she had discovered him for herself, and wanted everyone else to know about him.
(Now, she likes playing Jake Thackray's On Again, On Again to her girlfriends.)

I have a Jake Thackeray CD somewhere . Bought it for my ex as a present. She was an ardent fan, when she saw it, she just said, 'OH'. and never played it. I can still sing bits of Country Bus.

My brother got me a 4 cd set for my birthday one year. There's some good stuff on it (and some ropey stuff - mainly due to the more cheesy arrangements).

My Mum has a large (now) framed and signed poster of Jake. I think they went to see him a few times, and my step Dad got the man to dedicate a song to Mum!
There is some fabulous stuff on YT - Some folk our there have uploaded some fantastic unique footage of some wonderful music and films. It could be the best bit about the 'net is that no one will ever die away - the memories will live on and be visible to everyone as long as the servers keep going.
