They're likely to censor things that Steve ("Won't somebody think of the children?") Jobs doesn't like, as well. Illustrated versions of Ulysses and The Importance of Being Ernest (since rescinded after protests) and, for the Iphone, a gay guide to NYC (still in place). Why is it that anti-porners - who are bad enough as it is - will always gravitate to non-porn? The sponsors of original 1849 (I think it was) obscenity act said that it wouldn't be used on literature; almost the first thing that was prosecuted was literature (from memory; I'll go and look it up if you like). Still, it makes them look daft, so it's not really a bad thing.

'Course, once upon a time you could buy an Apple rest assured that it would have a certain amount of 'future compatibility' and your pride and joy would still keep going with the next two or three upgrades - which you could download for free of course. Nowadays they seem more up themselves and don't play that game anymore.

Sorry for the blank post folks, I am still trying to embed YouTube videos.
I started off with a Mac, mainly because I was in the printing trade and most printers require the high definition. I switched to a PC when my G3 Powermac struggled to cope with high speed broadband. I am now happily back with an iMac. It doesn't make a decent cup of coffee but it is learning.

Think Alpha's video could be applied to the iPhone 5. "We put all the technology in to something lighter". OK! I know it's got a new chip in it, but still.
Since this was posted of course, I became the owner of a friend of mines old 3G iphone. It's hanging on in there but very slowly, new apps are becoming less compatible. I'm hoping it'll last ten years though like my old Nokia 6150 did. I still hang on to that of course, but it got to the stage where a loose connection meant that one squeeze too hard caused it to cut off calls. Poor thing. 14 years old and still going strong though.

the suckers that queue over nights in terrible weathers to get their hands on these overpriced bells and whistles things that as soon as they buy it its obsolete to them because they next day they produce a even newer and more imporved bells and whistles. I did buy a ipad for my son in the spring it was the one before the latest because it was not so expensive and met our needs,my phone is a 2 year old nokia i don't need a new fancy one,its pay as you go for making phone calls when i need to contact someone which is what they are for.so i don't get stuck into contracts which bleed money from your savings .

I love technology..we're lucky to live in the fastest age ever. The level of innovation and learning far outweighs the previous 2000 years. Stop moaning you utter Luddites.

I agree about the technology, but I don't like predators like Micro$oft and Apple. MS has never innovated anything, and Apple is, to their shame, gradually turning into another MS. Android, son of Linux, is the way to go, and will be the Future when Apple has disappeared up its own carefully planned obsolescence. [/rant]

Gene Wolfe reckons that there was nothing to stop the Romans or maybe the Greeks (except the limitations of their own minds) from making balloons, and traveling in that way. How would things have been different if they had thought of it? Could they have conquered and held onto the whole world? I think they failed because they got too big (amongst other things); but balloons would have made the empire smaller, effectively.
Shame? What shame?

Nice to see the LG Nexus 4 - a phone some pundits say could happily compete in the £500 phone bracket come out at £239 the other week courtesy of the evil Google. Anyone see their British Boss plead innocence over tax tonight on Channel Four News?
I'm also looking forward to the first "Firefox" phone that will soon be (or is) running trials in Mexico. If they get that to go mainstream, good on 'em.
Had a near disaster with my elderly 3G t'other week. Hoping to get it's speed up I "Restored it". Unfortunately having done so I found half my Apps had disappeared and refused point blank to reload. Turned out that I'd let iTunes update them - and so whilst they were updated on the computer, the phone automatically ignored them because they were for a newer iOS.
Had to delete everything and managed to find an old back up on a spare hard drive so everything is back to normal. According to itunes now there are 19 updates available - updates that are incompatible with my phone!
Oddly enough, whilst I was bemoaning this on the evil Twitter - an acquaintance offered to give me his iPhone 4 at the end of December when his contract runs out and his company just gives him another. If he doesn't remember by then, it's no great shakes, but I said "Yes" anyway! We'll see.
Tragic thing is though - With the introduction of "Smart TVs" and TVs also running "Android" OS, how long before your telly too becomes "Obsolete" before it's actually packed up? Digitisation is not the perfect World - it's all about "control!" - of the market - and what and when you buy!

Digitisation is not the perfect World - it's all about "control!" - of the market - and what and when you buy! There's a lot in what you say, Patrick, but I think that with Android there's much more chance that things will be forward compatible, because Android is open-source (being Son of Linux), and used by multiple manufacturers. Apple can, do, and will make stuff obsolete whenever they feel like it -- a trail blazed by Micro$oft since day one. And Android is programmable, to those so inclined. I abandoned the Micro$oft Dark Side long ago, and have never been tainted by Apple, so I'm alright, Jack.

Itunes really seems the more I hear about it to be the work of a right bounder.
