I once read a book about life in France, that mentioned how the health service worked. Apparently you paid the doctor and then claimed it back. This worked well for doctors (somehow) who prescribed a lot of drugs - they made a good deal of money that way. Here's a great insight into the world of France's Healthcare. A bit long winded as it's a transcription of a radio feature - but an excellent piece of writing nonetheless. The description of the French Doctor's interpretation of "a cold" is amazing - leading you to think "If only ours were like that!"

Well worth a read...it's no wonder the french get battered when they go to war...a scrape from some barbed wire and they would be in a field hospital for 18 months! ;D
