Yes, I agree.
But as far as the R4 boards are concerned, it is only part of the story.
Other posters on those boards have disclosed that they have Asperger's and have been mercilessly pilloried as a result.
(You may remember the details of a particularly unpleasant outburst a couple of years ago, Alan.)

I vaguely remember someone saying he had aspergers but that, I fear, is as far as my board memory will go.

No.
I don't want to go into detail, but it arose in the context of the legendary Torture thread, involving a lot of BBC posters Alan knows (though I don't know if he posted on that thread) and some very nasty references to people's mental health problems were made on another board.

I do not, I fear, have any detailed recollection of these particular incidents. I remember a period of of troll infestation and aggressive postings. I would be very grateful Jean, if you could PM me a hint or two. This was possibly the time when I met my dear and sadly missed friend Luciesdad and our mission to rescue Real Millie Me from the dragon. She is now a close friend and her haute couture boutique is doing well. We do a lot of giggling on Messenger.

Such is life. Shortly after my first posting, something called Red appeared being very aggressive.

I've been following a thread about aspergers at The Bull where a poster was wondering whether to get diagnosed as such to score an advantage over her fellow workers when it came to redundancy. She got disabused about this idea, but eventually put on moderation because she turned unpleasant, and it appears she had some kind of history of abusive posts, under a different name .
She then began claiming aspergers sufferers were getting a raw deal, but disabled or not, she was nasty. So I reckon that people are getting wary of posters trying to excuse abuse under the cloak of aspergers.
Aspergers and autism are spectrum disorders, and quite a few of us (including yours truly) have taken on-line tests and found ourselves on the borderline. Nonsense, of course....in my case, at least!
However, many posters who had aspergers or had children with autism came along and provided a real insight into the condition...but politely.

I never saw the poster with Asperger's say anything other than simply that he had it. Have you got a link to the Bull thread?

Have you got a link to the Bull thread? www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio4/F2693943?thread=7650738You will see that the opening poster became a number; I'm not sure whether this means they were put into moderation or were banned. They had obviously been another poster before then. I went onto the thread out of interest and wasn't aware of any history. However there is a link in post 23 to another thread where the same poster was a bit rude to someone else, then claimed that people with aspergers were being kicked off.

Trolling (if you'll excuse the pun) through the thread I linked to, there is another reference from Redbookish at post 66 to the same poster's past history. I've never been interested in playing "spot the sockpuppet" but I suppose if you have been on the receiving end of a hurtful post it may be a different matter. The rule "address the post not the poster" isn't always easy to follow.
Many posters on that thread have high functioning autism or aspergers (I learn that they are the smae...) and were treated with courtesy by all, because they were courteous themselves.
* I may have been wrong to say that the poster was put into moderation "because" they were rude, though they were a bit!

I wasn't referring to Redbookish at all, skylark, though I agree that looking for sockpuppets is dubious behaviour and better avoided, however obvious the sockpuppetry may be if you've been around on the board for a while.
I suppose the 'Eddie' there is the same as the one posting on the Science board.
(Your posts are of course admirably balanced!)

Well, maybe not so balanced, Jean! I do have an unadmirable suspicion of people who seek a diagnosis of some personality trait in order to score an advantage over others; I do wonder if "aspergers" is becoming over-diagnosed?
And as always in these matters I draw on experience. The grandson of a friend was given the aspergers label as a (violent) child and treated as such. As an adult, the family was told this had been the wrong diagnosis; he may have a personality disorder (what used to be called a psychosis). Or he may be just plain nasty, though I gather he has learnt to control his temper.
Redbookish sometimes drives me up the wall, but she doesn't seem the sort to pick on someone for having a disability. If she had reason to spot a sockpuppet, it was because of their past unpleasant postings, not because of their condition.

my person with ASD Aspergers is on the Autism spectrum. Life is a challenge. He sees the world very differently and is very intelligent, they say even people like Bill Gates maybe on the spectrum, in fact if they ever thought to use pre natal testing to find the gene/marker for autism, many future mathmeticans, scientists ,artists, and other genuis's may not be born, since many will choose to abort, like they do with babys with downs. here is more info from the NAS web www.autism.org.uk/en-gb/about-autism/autism-and-asperger-syndrome-an-introduction/what-is-asperger-syndrome.aspx
