He could have explained to the lady that spiders are anxious to avoid humans. They just seek somewhere dark where they can catch flies. On second thoughts, explain to the spider.

I coudn't do that with a spider sezzers. Pick it up I mean. I blame my Grandmother for my irrational phobia. She would present me with large spiders cupped in her hands or sometimes in pot vases. She'd christen them with female names and would announce that Agatha had come to see me. I would turn round to be confronted by a large house spider on my bedroom pillow. They had an extensive garden and lots of trees at their home in Blackpool, where I would always stay on the last two weeks of the summer holidays. Late August early September, when of course large spiders emerge to find a mate. I believe my Grandmother had the very best intentions, but the reverse happened and I developed an enormous fear of them. Silly, but I do try to confront it.
