I was expecting a package from Amazon last Monday, on account of the tracking facility saying that it was on the courier's van.
Didn't arrive. Tracking thingy now says "incorrect address", which it isn't.
Contact Amazon -- yes they DO have a way to do that! Praise the Lord! Girl sounding SE Asian asks for more clues to feed the courier, such as nearby landmarks like pubs. Done. Courier now promises delivery on Tuesday.
Tuesday. Nothing. Tracker still says "incorrect address", which it still isn't.
Contact Amazon via telephone mechanism in email from SE Asia. They call me back (that's how it works). This time it's Kevin in Cork. He phones courier and they promise him they'll deliver on Wednesday.
Wednesday. Nothing by 22:00. Tracker still says "incorrect address", which it still isn't.
Thursday. Contact Cork again. They call me back. This time it's Alan. He phones courier with even more exact clues involving exact distance from so-and-so and so-and-so, and compass points, and Ordnance Survey grid details, etc., and they promise him they'll deliver on Saturday. He knocks them down to Friday.
So here's hoping.
The nice thing? It's the way Amazon is handling this, the staff, and the almost effortless problem-reporting system. No "if you've lost the will to live press the hash key" stuff.
I imagine they could put the courier out of business if they get much more of this nonsense from them. Hope it doesn't come to that, at least not before I get my package.
The courier? It's HDN. I've never had any problems with Amazon deliveries before, including via HDN. (The only "problem" I've had is when they delivered the same order twice, when I lived in Holland. They just said "keep it". It was a Lonely Planet guide plus a couple of other books. So I sold them.)
[Disclaimer: I have no connection with Amazon other than being a satisfied customer.]

Good to hear. Mink, is it? One time I ordered a book from Amazon on a Monday evening and it arrived by post on the Tuesday morning. Fair takes your breath away. Yesterday I ordered a music track (69p) and it arrived the same second I pressed Enter. Pity that doesn't work with actual solid items.

Amazon rulez!!! Book and CD/DVD heaven! The only problem I've ever had was when I ordered something from the US site that didn't arrive in the normal time span, when I contacted them (via email) I was told that if it didn't arrive by a certain time, they'd replace it. But it eventually turned up, so no need to take it further. They are good about returns as well, no questions asked, if you return something in proper returnable condition, they refund you. AH

Couple of years ago we were successfully ordering cases of cheap plonk from one of these (whisper it) television shopping channels. Things were going fine until something went wrong and the courier turned up with a very flat package that couldn't possibly be a case of wine unless they'd taken the bottles out. It was then that the whole relationship fell apart. The Indian call centre had absolutely no way of dealing with a problem that was "Off Script" so the wrong package sent with the right address on was completely beyond their comprehension, and to coin a corporate phrase they were also incapable of "escalating" the call to someone more senior. What astonished me that even being in India the company had no connection to the courier company - Phone up many other places and they can track the order for you and connect you to the courier if need be. Here - I had to chase them up as well!! I really should have billed them for the phone calls but it was a relief when it was over.
It took five weeks to get the money refunded and no apology or explanation so we gave up with the shysters and discovered the joys of Aldi's wine selection that came at similar prices. We had had a year of good service from them - Isn't it always the case thought that you never know a company properly until something goes wrong. I'd never been a fan of the idea of telly shopping - this kind of proved it. Still - there was the Wet and Dry Vax cleaner I got off them with £110 off the retail price. So it wasn't all bad.

Good to hear. Mink, is it? silly Mr Weyland, its leopard skin this this season, ~tsk~ Steady on, Costy! Consider my blood pressure. As soon as I saw the word "tsk", a vision of Ev in leopardskin manifested itself in my sensorium!

i've never had any probs with Amazon.. nor Play.com.. vair good n speedy deliveries.. you hear of the odd catastrophe with online shopping, but in general it seems to run vair vair efficiently and fast. gooood times. Once i ordered a mighty boosh box set dvd from play, and for some reason, my postman decided to post it through my open window one summer. I never found it, ( it got hidden behind a curtain and my hoovering efforts were somewhat few and far betwween back then, evidently) So i phoned Play to tell them it had not arrived after the relevant 10 days or so that they advise, and they duly posted out another box set to me, which i received. About a month later my then girlfriend discovered the original box-set behind the curtain ( i did say my hoovering was lax at the time, didnt i?) and so that one got flogged orff on ebay.

I ordered some trekking poles (British made from a British shop) on line. The delivery timescale was five to seven working days which cut it a bit fine, for I needed them for a walking holiday in Wales in a week's time time.
I lost my nerve on day five and phoned the shop, who did their best to track them down. But the brilliant thing was that they used Royal Mail,* so I popped down to the Post Office and there they were, waiting for delivery.
The shop said they used Royal Mail for just that reason; if the customer is out when the postman calls, there is likely to be a delivery centre in their nearest town. We've driven half way across the county to collect stuff before now.
* xenophobe? Who, me?

You unfortunately must have had the one Postman who either couldn't be bothered to knock on your door or to leave a post card telling you to go to the sorting office to pick it up.

Perhaps - but I suspect that the parcel had only just arrived. Had they delivered the next day (or even the day after) it would still have been within the delivery schedule

Update: The courier had promised -- again -- to deliver today, but instead they arrived yesterday evening at about 21:00. The guy looked a bit harassed. I guess Amazon had been doing some leaning.
Looked at another way, they still blundered, because I might well have been out since I wasn't expecting them until today. But all's well that ends well.
