What because of the noise quota? Best Beloved used to revel in buying noisy presents for relatives children. I always thought a harmonica was always quite a special present when on the receiving end - They always used to come in really posh looking boxes as if it was an expensive classical musical instrument. Go for it.

bought my grandchildren harmonicas for Christmas? Great present. Get them a Little Walter CD as well, one that has My Babe and Juke on it, and Love with a Feeling. (Eschew Larry Adler, fugawdsake.)

At least harmonicas are better than recorders. I asked Beth if she wanted a harmonica and she said "Yes, a Hannah Montana one" (she doesn't know what HM is, but obviously has heard about her. For those that haven't heard of her: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannah_Montana - ye gods) Have you tried saying "A Hannah Montana Harmonica"?

My niece (13) has taken up the oboe and gave us a recital a few months ago. I don't recommend it. Her school encouraged her because she was one of the few who managed to produce a note when blowing from it. She can now produce about six, and half of them squeek.

Although, from your description, she's already too good for that. Perhaps Take That would like to employ her as an understudy for Robbie, in case he might succumb to talent overload.

Didn't Hannah Montana turn into a bit of an old slapper recently? All pole-dancing and boobies out?

What tickled me was how a not quite 4 year old knows about Hannah Montana - or thinks she does (she has a Hannah Montana lunchbox and drinking cup). There isn't a Hannah Montana harmonica, btw. She just said that, assuming that you could get a HM anything.

She is the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus ( Achey Breakey Heart.) So far, her output seems to have been better than his.
