Why are they dressed up as joke French onion vendors? Dunno, and the Cliffe Bonfire Society website doesn't explain - at least other than to say the costumes are Guersney (http://www.cliffebonfire.com/history.html#historycliffe) . Neither does it seem to mention the protestant matyrs, but I'm pretty sure that they feature large in the Lewes tradition: www.bbc.co.uk/legacies/myths_legends/england/surrey_sussex/

Yes, certainly the M. word - he whose name must not be mentioned. I don't think the folk from Lewes would get away with that.

From what I can gather it is okay to burn effigies of individuals in the news, but not with the intention of targetting a racial group.
One Sussex village, bothered by travellers, got into hot water for burning an effigy of a gypsy caravan...complete with a family inside.

I wasn't thinking of a racial group, rather a representative of a religion. That would be targetting a religion, in a similar way that burning an effigy of the Pope would be. I somehow don't think that would be allowed though.

Was on the local news the other day that some author or other was complaining that an effigy of him had been burnt in the festivities this year, and he claims it was because he had written an article about the issues of raising a mixed race family. he felt the burning of his effigy was done under racist motives. i'll try n find a link.

www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/aug/31/diverse-britain-racism-lewes-sussex couldnt find anythink on the actual effigy row, seems the background in a nutshell, is that he wrote an article about moving to Lewes and the difficulties it caused, due to him having a black wife. seems a lot of locals took issue to this, and felt he was accusing them ofv being racist. And this all snowballled and hence, an effigy of him was burnt. The link i posted has a bit of background on it, if anyone is interested.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's because his wife is a Catholic rather than because she's black. She's well out of it -- they seem to make a habit of burning Catholics: Guy Fawkes, the Pope, Wayne Rooney -- all Catholics. Coincidence? Nothing but circumstantial evidence? Paranoia? I think we should be told. Sparra -- any truth in this?

I think Lewes has a touch of "The Wicker Man" about it.

I think Lewes has a touch of "The Wicker Man" about it. i think so too.... however i would love to go see the processions.. they had a big procession here in hastings to mark the end of 'hastings week' loads of mad drummer groups all dressed up with flaming torches and letting off flares n stuff marched through town, there was a huge turnout, and it all concluded with a bonfire on the beach and an amazing fireworks display. great atmosphere, i think the whole town turned out for it. the vibe is very pagan, or primal, or summat.. it feels qwuite edgy and weird, to be amongst all the people, the drum beats, the flares, the fire.. it reaches somethink deep inside, probly from the past, but it was great.. it felt like a different kind of world.. thats the bit i like. i aint especial;ly keen on burning effigies, no matter how 'frivolous' or tongue in cheek it may be.. just seems a bit sinister, that. But still, i would like to witness the Lewes procession.

heres the kerappy photos i took at the time.. all on my phone im afraid, wish i'd had me proper camera with me. Well I like them. Those joke Frenchmen get around. I think they must be holed up somewhere in the wilds of Sussex, plotting to flood the market with joke onions. Come to think of it, does Sussex have any wilds?

Come to think of it, does Sussex have any wilds? cheers matey:) i think if i recall correctly, the stripey joke frenchmen are based in eastbourne. there is a hastings group, who dress in black and red and often have their faces painted like skellingtons who wear top hats with feathers in and stuff.. actually someone asked me if i was a member of that group when i was in a pub the other day, im not sure why, but i was wearing a lot of eye-liner. theres loads of mad drumming groups all around sussex... also i know someone who is on a bonfire society, who is involved in all this malarkey, nice lady, she is the sister of a mate of mine who drums in a soul band down here. it is a bit weird, aint it?

everyone in st leonards needs 30p for somethnik or other... Sounds like the SB Green end of Shepherds Bush, only it's 50p or a quid there, what with the London cost-of-living and all. It's cheaper in NYC. A dollar. At least that's the going rate at Pennsylvania Station.

Poor old St Leonards. Used to be the posh end too! Did you know there used to be a massive stone archway across the road marking the line between St L and Hastings? Taken down when they widened the road but there's a plaque somewhere along the prom marking where it used to be. Looks grand there eh?
