A beaver that has been felling trees after escaping from a farm is being hunted by conservationists. The beaver is one of three that broke out of the farm in Lifton, Devon, in October, owner Derek Gow said. The other two have since been re-captured. The last six-stone (38kg) animal is believed to be felling trees up to 20 miles (32km) away on the banks of the River Tamar near Gunnislake, Cornwall. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7805128.stmThat's some serious destruction for a little critter! The funny thing is - A lot of our landscape that used to have trees now doesn't. and vice versa. The only reason why "Leaves on the line" is such a problem for our railways - is that 40 years ago we'd cut all the new growth down around the rail lines. A silver birch can shoot up in a very short time - as can the sycamore etc. Perhaps we could reintroduce these little fellas where they're needed!
I wonder if they taste any good?

BEAVER OR RACCOON ROAST WITH BARBECUE SAUCE RECIPE
1 small to medium beaver or raccoon cut into serving size pieces 1/2 tsp. salt 1 teaspoon instant minced onion 3 tbsp. brown sugar 1/2 cup chili sauce 1 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 ( 7 oz.) bottle of beer or pickle juice
Place pieces of beaver or raccoon in a foil-lined roasting pan. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. and roast, covered for a half hour. Meanwhile, mix other ingredients in a small bowl for barbecue sauce. After meat has roasted a half hour, uncover and pour barbecue sauce over the pieces. Then roast, uncovered, for another half hour to an hour--until tender. Baste several times during cooking, using your barbecue sauce.

Funnily enough, "Countryfile" has been reporting on people who went all the way over to Germany to a "Beaver Rescue Centre" to collect a family of Beavers to release (eventually) into the wild!
Seems like they've been beaten to it!
I tried to get the details from the CF website - but everytime you try and get to the specific page it diverts you to the iplayer page.
