Wadda guy! He thought of everything didn't he? Perhaps somewhere they'll find a frozen brothel too. It was a man's world in those days when women did as they were told and I think we were better off for it. Equality especially in the workplace I believe has been to our detriment. A woman's place is in the home...to heat the coals for the adventurer's return...a warm bath, warm hands, and a hot stew bubbling slowly in a pot...

It's such a shame - and, indeed, a great mystery - that you can't find a woman to share your vision with you.

They need to be,hard working, warm, sexy, attractive, a little adventurous (polite wording for a bit perverse), able to get on with my mother, kind, and indeed perhaps submissive...but above all patient. Mum tends to audition them all quite adequately. She knows what's best. She's out there somewhere.

As to liking my whisky with ice, I like 4 or 5 (depending on size) ice cubes in my single malt. Thanks. Nothing else. And not 3 ice cubes or 6 ice cubes either. I'm quite particular.

I remember an inn near Pitlochry in the early '70s -- my then-wife's cousin owned it -- where I first tried a single malt, neat. And very nice it was too (Glenmorangie, but I've learned since). Anyway, they had hundreds of Scotches to choose from. There was a jug full of clear liquid with ice-cubes on the bar, regularly topped up, which the locals would tip into their whiskies at will. Pure local spring water, I assumed, until I tasted it. Cold flat lemonade. I kid you not. Another illusion shattered. I hardly drink spirits these days, but if pushed I would choose Lagavulin. No ice. No water. No lemonade.

I bought a bottle of their finest and it was truly wonderful.

The lady I was with bought a bottle, and I got some whisky marmalade. Both delicious. I wanted to buy a mug, but they don't sell them -- they give them away with coffee. Strange. So I bought a coffee . . .
