Just put a mini review of this on Facebook;
"Trying out this weeks bargain basement wine from Aldi - Australian Chardonnay at £2.69. Smells fruitier than it tastes! I'm getting flavours of sellotape, nail polish remover and just a hint of marker pen. Not one of their best - and they are usually rather good!"
I think it needs to breathe actually, because having sat in the glass for a bit it's mellowing nicely. I'm not a fan of Chardonnay - and avoid it at the best of times, but I am a wine whore and when faced with a £2.69 price tag - well! They are also doing a Merlot Rosé which we'll try out tomorrow (or later depending!) For the moment - it's settling down to mellower flavours of sellotape, and nail polish remover!

After an additional tasting from Best Beloved - we have decided that both that and the Merlot are heading for the sink. Disgusting. avoid at all costs. Trouble is, now our palates are tainted!

I remember reading ages ago, that the difference in quality between, say, a £2.99 and a £4.99 bottle is phenomenal. Because of the tax on wine, and I'm not sure what it is but it was £1.50 a bottle, the actual worth of a £2.99 bottle is £1.49, whereas a £4.99 bottle is £3.49. So you're getting far far better quality on the £4.99 bottle. I usually look for the stuff in Somerfields that is on offer - say, £5.99 down to £3.99. You usually get a decent bottle then.
Why don't you usually like Chardonnay? I think it's a good gutsy wine. The Aussie ones are usually pretty good.

One the other hand it was one of Malcolm Gluck's Mantras that you CAN buy plenty of decent wine for a fiver or less and you should not pay any more!
Aldi do a lovely selections of wine for around the £3 mark - better than a lot of the stuff I've had at the same price at Sainsbury's.

It's worth pointing out - that this wine was on special offer - the usual price for it is £5.49!
Perhaps they realised they had a bad batch and needed to offload it - quick!
