Trubble, I'm really sorry to hear about your sister and I hope she's OK.

In what way would you like me to disagree with you? Sorry, I am in a belligerent frame of mind. Okay - you could start with: "Don't worry, housesparrow my dear. You carry on enjoying your little drinks - I'm sure they aren't causing dementia. Indeed, we know you to be an incisive, witty, on-the-ball poster whose wits are sharpened by a daily noggin." You drink alcohol DAILY? Wow. Hardcore. If someone is pissed half the time, how can you tell if they're senile? Drunk people all talk such rubbish anyway.

I feel the same as luc does about it - ie torn. When my sister's lung collapsed at about 11pm on a Saturday night, her treatment was compromised completely by drink-related injuries taking precedent. For a start, she couldn't get an ambulance to collect her from outside the pub she happened to be in, having a quiet drink, so she got a taxi to the hospital in deep pain, not knowing what was wrong. Because she arrived in a taxi, not ambulance, her later treatment was also compromised, incidentally. When she got to A&E they assessed it as a collapsed lung and she sat in a corridor watching the stomach pumpees and drunken stab wounds being taken before her because they were more life threatening, fair enough I suppose, still she sat there for hours, in pain. When she got a doctor, she was given a local anesthetic so that they could insert a tube in between her ribs or something. The doctor fainted while doing it, apparently having been overworked, the partly inserted-tube was ripped out as she fell, so eventually the tube was put in by another doctor but after the anesthetic had mostly worn off. Her boyfriend had to hold her down. On the other hand, I tried to buy alcohol from the off-license the other night and was refused because it was 10.02 pm. Off licenses must stop selling at 10. The pub next door closes at midnight. That pisses me off. Greatly. I am going to start stock-piling my alcohol. It's the only sensible thing to do Trubbs. I now have a separate fridge for our booze and wine. Best thing really. We wouldn't like to be caught short. Hope your sister is recovered now.

You must admit he is being very quiet for a man who is alive. He's in the garden, burying his receipts.

If someone is pissed half the time, how can you tell if they're senile? Drunk people all talk such rubbish anyway. But I drink alcohol daily. I usually have a glass or two of wine before dinner. I HATE it if I can't have a glass of wine before dinner. Last night I had two glasses of wine before dinner then we went down our local and met friends and I had two double whiskies with ginger ale, plus a couple of bottles of fizzy water (for the healthy option). I don't like the fact that all this binge drinking talk is making me take stock of what I drink.

OOps, I've conned you all, I only said ''a'' saturday night to highlight that it happened by unlucky coincidence during the biggest drinking night - drink rush hour. It was ages ago! And her recovery from the lung thing was grand, it was all the other stuff that happened as side effects to inadequate medical care that would make your hair stand on end.. but a long time ago and she is very happy and healthy now and thank you so much for your well-wishes. It was an odd thing to happen, the doctors could give no reason for it, not even smoking, they were bemused.

I don't like the fact that all this binge drinking talk is making me take stock of what I drink. Me neither. Between that and rjpageuk I feel like an alcoholic. Don't let them harass you, everso! We shall overcome.

I am not coming then BTW I defend your right to drink what you want whenever you want (as long as you are of sound mind), I will just continue to tell you it is bad for you (which it is). If people cant be trusted to drink sensibly despite being educated about the dangers then I think going down the route of banning/limiting the sale etc. are just patching over the problem which will never solve it.

We ban all sorts of dangerous drugs so why not alcohol? Yes, I know there are calls to de- criminise the use of clasified drugs, to regularise the sale etc etc. But so you really think it okay to sell prescription-only medicine over the counter, provided enough wrning s are given?.
I don't think people can be educated over drugs, including alcohol. A lot of us have no real idea of how addiction can take hold until we try to stop.
As for cherry coke - won't someone please invent a grown-up non alcoholic drink that isn't citrus or fizzy or sweet?

As for cherry coke - won't someone please invent a grown-up non alcoholic drink that isn't citrus or fizzy or sweet? Excellent gripe. I tried virgin marys for a little, too heavy, then tonic water, it's really disgusting without gin, I suppose there are non-alcoholic beers but I never could bring myself to try one.

What will solve it? Brainwashing? Maybe there isnt a solution, I dont know. However I think if the "solution" is banning people from having something then we are better off with the problem. I love cherry coke! Water is the perfect non citrus/fizzy/sweet grown up drink!

theres Schloer grape juice red or white without the alcohol if you must. one minute they say red wine is good for you the next it can cause horrible dieseases, i wish they would make up their minds whats good or bad. They ask those 100 year olds how have outlived everyone and they often say a dram of whisky or a drop of sherry every day.so who knows excpet of course if you drink like Paul Gasgoine and are waiting for the pubs to open at 7 o clock in the morning then it must be bad.

"Everything in moderation" Is the other.
Who hasn't come back from an evening with friends though and found that that last cup of tea of the evening is still the best drink of the day?
For appearances sake there's always apple juice? People don't realise (unless they've come across some of the bigger Kent farmer's markets) just how many different types of apple juice you can buy!

The thing to do here is to rub gin around the rim of the glass. According to folk lore the tonic then tastes like it's got gin in it. I've never tried it because, frankly, I like my gin inside the glass. LD

So a nice glass of fizzy water with some ice and a slice of lemon is nice between whiskies.
