Limewire is annoying me today. *And by that I mean FREE.I've been sitting here for hours waiting for someone to answer you, as Limewire is being really crap for me too today. And one night in the chatroom Alpha & SWl suggested other programmes, so I was kind of hoping one of them would remind us what they were . . . . Oh, and another thing, I can't get DVDs to play on my pc (XP). And I've tried downloading these free video player software things, but my DVDs keep jamming on them too. I had sat down here with 'Lost in Translation' and toffee cupcakes but after hours of putting software on and off my pc I've given up and am reading a magazine instead.

1: Get a proper P2P utility (utorrent is my choice) www.utorrent.com/Dead easy to use. 2: simply use google to search for anything you want...just add the word "torrent" to the end of whatever you are searching for and you will get loads of places to download it from. EG: you want "october by U2" search for "U2 October torrent" Or alternatively, use "the pirate bay" which has a massive collection of music, videos, films, tv series, audiobooks etc thepiratebay.org/AH

It might just have a CD drive...in which case it won't be able to read or play DVD's AH

And how does one overlay a soundtrack (and by that one means song from limewire) on a video that one has borrowed from youtube? You should have "windows movie maker" in your list of programs...that will do wot you want. If you don't have it, DL from here... www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspxAH

RG, you are welcome...look on the front of your CD tray, it will probably state if it's a CD or DVD multi drive on it.
Internal DVD drives (to plumb into yer big PC) can be picked up for £20.
External ones to link to your lappy/PC are a bit more expensive starting at around £40

My Lappy happily played DVD's for ages. Then all of a sudden didn't. I downloaded VLC media player or something like that (all I remember was it's logo was a traffic cone). It then happily played everything that wouldn't normally.
It's cos these blasted Music/Video producers keep messing around with things called "Codecs" which put extra bits in DVD's - I presume - to stop them being copied to hard drives.

I think I don't know which button to press for muting what sound might be already on the clip and/or putting a song over it. I would like to make a couple of home movies doing that but also perhaps a few Obama ones. Would anyone here, not looking at anyone, Alph, like to talk me through that very slowly step by step?

Sorry Trubb, I've only ever made a few muzac vids to upload onto yoochoob...I only needed to add a soundtrack to a static, unmoving picture (that had no sound to begin with). I might have a little nob around with it later and see if I can do what you ask...if successful I will pass on the results of my epic research to ya. AH

My Lappy happily played DVD's for ages. Then all of a sudden didn't. I downloaded VLC media player or something like that (all I remember was it's logo was a traffic cone). It then happily played everything that wouldn't normally. It's cos these blasted Music/Video producers keep messing around javascript:add('%20:StarWars:%20')with things called "Codecs" which put extra bits in DVD's - I presume - to stop them being copied to hard drives. VLC does indeed use a traffic cone for an icon and is very handy and easy to use - www.videolan.org/vlc/A codec is not for putting in extra bits, but for compressing/decompressing the picture/sound. As things move on more and more advanced codecs are used to minimise disk space while still being able to offer high resolutions/quality. This means it is sometimes difficult to keep up with the latest codecs and your PC will not be able to play more modern encoded videos. VLC gets around this by installing a load of codecs with it including the most common ones therefore ensuring they work. One other thing is that I would recommend against people using google to search for torrents of stuff they want because this is a sure fire way to get all manner of dodgy things on your PC unless you really know what you are doing. It is never a good idea to download files to run on your PC from a site you know nothing about and has quite a high likelihood of being dodgy.

I wondered about that, and even though there does at least seem to be "established" torrenting sites, you still wonder.

Simple solution, scan everyting you DL with your AV package before opening/running it, it only takes seconds.
Also, if like me, you use PirateBay or another torrent site, there are plenty of reviews of what you are DLing...folks are always quick to point out "sinister" stuff, low quality stuff, stuff that doesn't work or doesn't match the description.

Yeah there is a big difference between using an established site such as piratebay (with a review system/measures in place to stop people distributing dangerous stuff) and just doing a google search for torrents which looks anywhere and everywhere!
