Danny Alexander, the LibDem First Secretary to the Treasury -- and a Scot -- was just on FiveLive. In this slot they always ask interviewees a set of standard questions at the end . . .
Q: What was your childhood ambition?
A: To play cricket for . . . <wait for it> . . . England.
In pre-watershed language, the closest I can get is vermin. And I'm not even a Scot.
If his party wasn't already finished, it surely is now.

Well, no one would want to play for Scotland, against the minor counties of England. Even Wales have managed better than that.

Well, no one would want to play for Scotland, against the minor counties of England. Even Wales have managed better than that. It just seems wrong to me, Aubrey. A bit like signing a solemn pledge before an election and then reneging on it afterwards. Or Freddie Trueman playing for Lancashire. And then there's the fact that he's prepared to air it on network radio. The man has no shame. No emotional intelligence. It all adds up. Or maybe it's just me. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw Cyril Smith, RIP. I certainly would never vote LibDem again. Or New Labour, or Tory. (If I'm still here at election time, that is, which is doubtful.) [Isn't Wales regarded as England in the context of cricket?]

Bit of trivia - thanks to the influence of the Brits in France - Le Cricket is gaining momentum out there even amongst the locals. Perhaps that's where we could send Alexander!

Village I once lived in in Holland had a cricket team. Only a couple of the players were British (they worked at IBM). Not uncommon in Holland, in fact I believe there have been Dutch players in English County teams -- maybe still are -- I don't follow cricket. Used to play, can't watch unless it's a pub pitch in high summer.

Never could understand cricket. My grandad played for Scotland though apparently.

I think he did, for a season: just 40 over, though. (It might not have been Lancs).
The Dutch had a team in the last world cup, I think.
The ECB is really the E&WCB.

I was made to watch a cricket match at junior school on a blazing hot day and got a really bad headache as a result. I've always hated it ever since. I don't even know what an over is.
My ex-boss was a one time player for Chelmsford Cricket Club and dispaired of me - our office was within spitting distance of Essex County Cricket ground as well.

Actually a few Scots have played cricket for England - Mike Denness is probably the most famous though he wasn't all that much cop and Gavin Hamilton was not too bad.
And of course we've had Eoin Morgan the Irishman playing for England too!
I guess till we get a UK/Great Britain team any Scots or Irish who are any good at cricket will just have to play for England - just like the Welsh do!

Ireland didn't do badly in the world cup last time - didn't they beat Pakistan? Someone like that.
